It looks like some sort of psaltry and a busted bow.

It's called a ukelin, it's strummed, plucked and bowed all at the same time. There are 16 strings... 4 in 4 sets, each set makes a cord (strummed) and each is plucked. If you look closely between those little metal loops, there are notes named, thats where you "bow". The bow isn't busted, but it badly needs new horsehair. I have music for it, but no talent... lol. Still it's a curiosity.

Interesting. How do you hold it? What does it sound like? Is it homemade?

There's others, but this is the shortest and "best" sounding. Most people hold them on their laps I think, although one guy had it under his chin.

I'm looking for a lap harp and a bowed psaltry. Part of my retirement plan is to play my violin and mountain dulcimer at ren-faires as I travel around the country. The kid thinks she might like to do that do and she likes the bowed psaltry. The lap harp is just because I like them. I'm having a heck of a time with my 6-string mountain dulcimer. It is a bit more powerful than my fingers. I'm thinking about getting a set of metal thumb and finger picks. Bet that would give me the edge over those strings. It is either that or get a 3 or 4 string and give up some of the sound.

Nice, interesting to watch him play even though the clicking is somewhat distracting.

This is one of my favorite mountain dulcimer videos - guy having fun with his toys -
