On a serious note: regarding security at public events or spaces, the authorities seem to always be reacting or overreacting in many cases. After the shoe bomber, passengers at airports around the world had to remove their shoes before being allowed through the metal detector. After the would-be liquid bomber, passengers are only allowed to carry on a certain miniscule amount of liquid on board airplanes.
The truth of the matter is that there must be a million permutations of means to attack someone in a public space, a pitched shoe is but one of them. What's next? Are they going to ban pencils, silly putty, eyeglasses, lip balm, hats, scarves, dental floss? The reality is that any of the aforementioned items may be used as a weapon.
