Why do Mario and Luigi wear gloves?

I want to smell dark matter
The obvious answer is "because they're plumbers" but they don't really look like proper plumber gloves (we all know what they look like!) so I think it's really because the Mushroom Kingdom is filthy and rife with disease.
 
Considering their propensity to jump into bodies of water and swim for exceedingly long lengths, the attire in general is highly inappropriate.
 
They need those gloves to handle their pipes.
 
They don't want to leave fingerprints.

Are Wario and Waluigi plumbers too? Is a question nobody would ever care to ask.
 
The dress the same, so either they are plumbers, or the four of them have a 70s breakdancing group.

 
Also their names should either be "Wario and Wuigi" or "Wamario and Waluigi" really.

Another thing no one wants to ponder is that the Goombas somehow evolved from raviolis with faces on them into dick-tips with faces on them.
