DID YOU CHECK YOUR TASK MANAGER LOL?

HOW ABOUT YOUR CONTROLL PANELS ROFL?

DO YOU HAVE THE APPROPRIATE SERVICES TURNED ON ROTMAWDTLT?

I have Auto GK too, it takes just as long but at least I get those cool DOS shell windows to look at once in a while.

Nothing's maxing out in the Task Panel. But I haven't bought a new comp in 3 years. I'm getting the itch. This 1.3GHz with 512 RAM isn't cutting it. Also I need more disc space now that I'm hooked. Someone get on that, please. Thanks.

512mb is dismal to encode with. The 1.3Ghz is not helping either. Encoding is very memory and CPU intensive.

But there may be a very simple reason why it's taking so long. Your computers need to swap during the encoding process. It helps to have 30% MINIMUM of your drive free at all times so the computer can swap and read the Vob's in tandem efficently. Another thing that can drastically improve speeds but most are too lazy to keep in check in defragmention of your drive. I cannot stress how important it is too defragment your drive regularily.

And not with windows ultra-shit defragmenter either. Get a copy of Diskeeper www.diskeeper.com and keep running it until you get the drive fully defragged. Take what you can off on CD and try again with Auto GK.

The files being ripped and converted are on an external drive, but that's filling up too, I do need to save stuff off. But I have to bring my drive into work and burn some of them to DVD, they're too big for CD.

Which is another reason I want a new comp, my DVD drive is read-only. :(

Well there's part of your problem as well. Depending on the connection to the external -- is it USB? Would that be USB 1.1 or USB 2.0? -- you could be dealing with a more or less severe bottleneck between the actual system and the information you're asking it to process.

Also, basic optimization tweak you may not know --

Start> Control Panel> Sytem> Advanced>

Set your Memory usage to favor Programs in both the instances where it lets you choose Programs vs. Background, and set a custom Pagefile size. I've heard you should set the Pagefile to 1 1/2 times your physical memory, and that seems to work, but when you choose a Custom pagefile size, you'll have two slots to enter values into. Make the values exactly the same. Then click "Set". You may need to reboot after implementing this, but it's worth it.

Especially if that transcode is still at only 9%. lol

I still have the same computer, but I have since added a gig of RAM and have larger drives. I also can't remember the last time I used DivX. It's all AutoGK or if it's going straight to my iPod, IMToo.
