Why is grand central station so high?

I mean trains are what, 10-15 feet high, and the station is about 150 feet high.

Did they just forget to stop building up once they started?

Not only that, but all the platforms and tracks start underground.

That just raises even more questions!

Because it's Grand Central Station. I'd want a cathedral-like feeling if I walked into any station that had the balls to call itself grand...

Ever seen Canary Wharf station here in London?

I went there today for the first time and it's really incredible. It's also way bigger than it could ever need to be.

This is the upstairs section.

And the more ordinary downstairs which is of course underground.
