Why, this brain flies on rat cunning!

It sounds like science fiction: a brain nurtured in a Petri dish learns to pilot a fighter plane as scientists develop a new breed of "living" computer. But in groundbreaking experiments in a Florida laboratory that is exactly what is happening.

"When we first hooked them up, the plane 'crashed' all the time," Dr DeMarse said. "But over time, the neural network slowly adapts as the brain learns to control the pitch and roll of the aircraft. After a while, it produces a nice straight and level trajectory."

I wonder why traditional computers can't determine the difference between sensed objects in their environment? Are the programmers trying to be too fancy? That's my hypothesis, at least. They're trying to feed the existing AI a catalogue of objects and identifications, instead of teaching the computers to exclusively use only very, very basic techniques for identifying and cataloguing new objects on their own.

For example, instead of teaching the computer to identify "table" and "lamp", they should be teaching the computer to identify "horizontal" "vertical" "plane" "curve" "mobile" "stationary" "light-emitting" and "non-light-emitting". The AI would then distinguish these elements and draw a distinction between "table", "lamp" and even "human" on its own.

Very astute. This is the same methodology that is applied to National Socialism's worldview: not seeking closed ended answers, but finding the right path through examining the relationship among the things of life.
