why...Why...WHY?!?!? WHY REMAKE "THE THING"!?!?!?!

50's version: meh...

Carpenter's 80's version with Kurt Russel (based on the short story "Who goes there") - DEFINITIVE!!!!

It had it all. The physical effects, the gore, needless "flinch" moment when people got their thumbs sliced open, lines like:
"What is it?"
"I don't know, but it's weird and pissed off!"

Kurt Russel as FROZEN HAM (only Jack Nicholson did it better).

Why does Hollywood ruin my fondest memories with useless remakes?!?!

Next Year: Casablanca II: Staring Nicolas Cage, Ashley Simpson, and Sinbad as "Sam".

The irony is, I think your casting of "Casablanca II" is actually better than what Hollywood would come up with.

God, what a waste. I remember watching The Thing on HBO or VHS when I was a young kid, it scared the poop out of me. I recently watched it again last year (I was burning through the "old classics" on Netflix), and I was surprised by just how dark and bleak it was. Definitely not a "happy ending", but a great, suspenseful flick! Remaking it just to take advantage of CGI is fucking pointless. I mean, "The Day the Earth Stood Still" with Keanu was great, right?

I need to watch "An American Werewolf In London" again. I'm pretty sure it wasn't of the caliber of the Carpenter "The Thing", but I remember it as an enjoyable and scary monster flick and I think the traditional FX for it were preferable to crap CGI work.

CGI is only good if you can afford to do it correctly. There are plenty of movies with crappy CGI, especially the all-CGI kids movies that are done on the cheap.

CGI can sometimes be distracting. Take the prequel trilogy as an example. One of the reasons I loved the OT so much, was because the actors could interact with Jabb, the Ewoks, etc. It was more organic. No matter how good an actor is, you can tell when he's talking to a tennis ball on a string. It's awful.

All that being said, when CGI is done well, it can be absolultely magical. My favorite film last year was Wall-E, the animation in that film was seamless, and downright stunning.

As all the great masterminds grow old and die, there is hardly anyone else out there with an imagination great enough to come up with new ideas. So, the movie industry's trying to play it safe by sticking only to whatever it believes works...which is remakes!
