Windows Problem

NeonMercuryASH

beer, I want beer
I've gotten this recently. Blue screen, saying windows must shut down to protect my computer. Auto reboot. I sent the report to microsoft. THEY DON"T KNOW WHY, but they say it's some kind of driver?

You mean like the electrical cord?
I think he means like the box in your computer that the power cord goes into.

It regulates the power coming in and splits it into those cables that you plug into the devices inside your computer.

That sounds like a pretty likely explanation.

If it's a laptop, then I don't know. You may have to take it in for repair. If you have the recovery disk, you may try to install. But you may lose all of your personal files if you recover with the recovery disk.

use another computer to get a boot disk from and on pre XP machines you would run a SCANREG_RESTORE . On an Xp machine you should be able to back up a week or two on system restore. If thats not it Its a hardware issue and needs to go to the hardware geeks at a shop like grammar boy said.

laptops are not what I dig into. :(

A funky shut down does sound like a power supply problem like others have said.

Sucks if it's a faulty part inside a laptop.

Some of those things are hard as fuck to replace.

No kidding, a single part on a lap top keyboard can be a PITA. I will keep a few desktops around till then.

If it's a hardware problem and it's under warranty, send it in and let them deal with it.

You might want to check your event log and see if any fatal errors are listed there first, though (assuming this is XP).

Go to Start-->Run and type or paste in eventvwr.msc and check the Application and System logs for errors (BIG RED CIRCLE WITH A WHITE X IN IT). Double click on any you find that happened at around the time the computer last decided to shut down. That may help you track down the problem if it's a software issue.

Error Message:

The semaphore is set and cannot be closed.

Explanation:

A semaphore cannot be closed while it is set.

User Action:

Release the semaphore, or wait for it to be released. Then close it. You may have to contact the supplier of the running application.

hmmmmmmmmmm......... oh yeah I know what THAT is!!!

I swearsome of this stuff is even tougher to understand than the US tax code.

A brief Google search yields the following possiblities:

1) Make sure all your drivers are up to date. Weren't you having trouble with your ethernet drivers awhile back? Yeah, check all of your drivers, including everything for your motherboard. If it's an older laptop, the drivers that came with the install CD may be out of date. Check the manufacturer's site for the latest.

2) Running Norton or McAfee AV? Uninstall/reinstall them.

3) Could be a RAM problem. Remove and reseat your RAM stick(s). They should be fairly easy to access.

4) If you have a lot of shit loading on startup and there are a lot of icons in your systray down by the clock, shut them off. Start--->Run--->msconfig...go to the Startup tab and uncheck everything that's not necessary.

There are a few more things to try if those don't work, but outside of possible bad RAM it doesn't seem to be a hardware problem.
