Would you kill a person for a million dollars???

...a hypothetical question, of course. For some reason I got to thinking about Jules (from Pulp Fiction) and the $800 in his wallet and his proposed career change. I was thinking "damn, now he's starting out with nothing". But of course that was just his "walkin' around" money. He's likely got money socked away elsewhere. Depending on what killing pays, he could likely "walk the earth" in relative comfort. Which brings me to my point:

Would you kill a person for a million dollars? It wouldn't be someone with bodyguards and such, just some guy (or girl (or kid?)). You're not guaranteed to avoid being caught, although the odds are certainly in your favor. You are guaranteed that the money is untraceable and you can do with it what you want. Put it in a no-load mutual fund, indexed to the Dow Jones or the S&P 500 and you can likely pocket around $70,000 a year without lifting a finger or touching the principal. Heck, you could live pretty comfortably on $70k and still have some money to give to worthy causes.

Besides, it isn't like you're really killing someone, are you? I mean, he's dying anyway--just like we all are. You're just speeding it up a little. Heck, if you're competent, maybe you're actually doing him a favor. He doesn't have to worry about his student loans anymore. And being pushed off a cliff or shot with a high powered firearm is a lot more pleasant death than most cancers or Alzheimers or a host of other diseases.

What do you think? Could you do it? Would you do it? Why or why not? (There's a good chance I'll argue against you whatever you say.) :)

No.
I have enough guilt for other things I have participated in, I cannot imagine the guilt of killing someone.
Begin your argument now.

After that dentist killed the lion I saw FB posts that said, "I cannot believe people are upset over the one lion that got killed, they kill animals every day and eat them, they should feel as much rage about that!"
Please do not let your argument be like that.
And don't tell me that I kill people by purchasing a table at Ikea either.

I think with the way the cost of living has risen over the years, the premise in this philosophical question should be upgraded to @10 million. Philosophy/ethics professors, take note.

As for me, I could see myself deciding to do it, but I don't know if I would be able to carry it out when the time came.

I doubt I'd be able to do it, but knowing (or being led to believe) the person was a murder, or ganster or something would help a lot. There'd have to be some sort of justification to relieve the conscience.

I don't think I could ever take another life and live with myself afterwards.

Except maybe Wolf from Gladiators. He's a shit.

If I would kill a person for a million dollars, I wouldn't admit it here or anywhere else.

LOL@indexed no-load mutual fund.

Not all of us are savvy enough to successfully game the rubber nipple market. A fairly safe 7%/year is nothing to sneeze at.

As for the argument, I kind of showed my hand already. You don't really need to think of it as killing someone. He/she's gonna die at some point no matter what. You're just taking a little of the randomness out of it. I mean, he could get hit by a runaway truck tomorrow. Or a load of rebar from a construction site could fall on him. Or the brakes could go and he could get hit by a train. Heck, he could have a heart attack or choke on some gristle or get food poisoning. Right after you said "no, I'm not interested" he could get knifed by a bum in a mugging that went tragically awry. And then you've just thrown away a million bucks. (And who's to say that any of the above weren't orchestrated by someone else, less squeamish than you?) The person in question is going to die. It is just a matter of if you get paid relatively well when it happens or not. Heck, there's probably also a nice little insurance policy in it for someone. Let's face it: no one wants to die. But it happens to all of us sooner or later. Someone might as well benefit from it. Right? :ohwell:
