Sleeping North Dakota Woman Mistakenly Fires Shotgun in Bed
Tuesday, January 06, 2009

FARGO, N.D. — Fargo police say a woman triggered a shotgun by rolling over on it in bed.

Police Sgt. Jeff Skuza says the discharge sent a pellet through a wall and into the headboard of her neighbor's bed.

Skuza says the woman's neighbor wasn't home at the time. He says the neighbor reported the incident to police Monday morning after finding the hole.

Police say no one was injured.

Skuza says the woman with the shotgun could face charges ranging from negligent discharge, discharge of a gun in city limits and reckless endangerment.

Y'know...

I got nothin'. I can't conceivably figger out a reason someone would have a loaded shotgun in bed with them. Under the bed, sure. Leaning up against the nightstand? Why not? But how does someone come to the conclusion that "Hey. You know what would be a good idea? I should load up a 12 guage, rack a shell into the chamber, put it in bed with me, and go to sleep." I mean shit. If someone breaks into your house in the night and is watching you sleep, the shotgun isn't going to help you. It is too long to bring to bear quickly, so you might as well just put it nearby. If you absolutely NEED to sleep with a gun you should get a pistol.

I thought Tex was already out when you enlisted. :bergman:

It's not gay when it's really cold*. :bergman:

*This is a joke/standard statement learned in Basic. It has partially been replaced with "It's not gay when you've been extended."

How cold/hot did it get over there, anyway?

It snowed in Baghdad last year. Up north around Samara (where we were first deployment) it gets really cold.

Heat wise it can get up to 130 in a Stryker. Over a hundred in the shade.

You'll like this: last Halloween I went down to my sister's family home in DC, where they were having a party. They live in a community with a lot of retired ex-spooks from all branches: CIA, NSA, what have you. One woman told this story about how she went away on an assignment for about two weeks and forgot to put the Glock that she kept under her pillow in the safe --and by the time she remembered it, the maid service had already come & gone. She called a friend to go over & check and when he did, he found the bed made, perfectly, with the gun placed neatly on the pillow like a hotel mint.

I don't get the under the pillow thing. Maybe it's b/c I'd have to get my glasses off the bedside table anyway, but I don't see how the few miliseconds extra would be worth the danger.
