Your First Memories...

Volpone

Zombie Hunter
OK.

So "Apollo 13" is on in the background. Wiki tells me the mission went in 1970. That means while it would be theoretically possible for me to remember it it is no surprise that I don't remember it when it happened.

Now the Fall of Saigon, that I probably should remember. I think I was in kindergarten when that happened. And I have memories from kindergarten. But my earliest date-specific event that I remember is a Bi-Centennial coloring contest in school. We all colored a picture of George Washington. I don't remember if he was crossing the Delaware or what, but it was clearly a 1976 event.

Beyond that, I remember the first time I saw "Star Wars" in a movie theater. And I remember the premiere of "Battlestar Galactica." I remember that because something happened and President Carter interrupted the broadcast. I don't remember if that was the Iranian Hostage Crisis or what, but it really screwed up the pilot.

I remember peeking under my mom's shirt to see my little brother. He was born when I was 2, so I was pretty young at the time.

Oh. I remember (sorta) when my brother was born. When they got him home I climbed up on his crib to look down on him (I was just about to turn 2). My feet slipped and I banged my chin on the rail of the crib and sliced it open--this was right at dinner time. I had to go to the hospital to get my chin stitched up. By the time we got back my milk had gotten warm. For years and years after that I preferred my milk served warm.

The light bulb over the crib - 6 months old. Then, the new face of the person my mother hired to babysit me and whom I would come to know as granny, even though she was not related to me. Before that time, I was quiet content to be unaware. Beginning on that day I learned about cows, gardening, painting fences, greasing chickens for blue bugs, my numbers and how to read - then they put me in a private school at 4 years old. Since then, the world has been stuffing my brain with all kinds of things. If they'd just have left the light off....

Politically I remember the Iranian hostage crisis but it just bugged me that my parents wouldn't let me watch something I wanted to and I remember Reagan winning the presidency...That was all in like 1979-80 so I was like 6 or 7.

My earliest memory was when I was probably only 2, maybe a little older, my brother used to get me out of my crib and he wasn't much bigger than I was.

I actually remember the Apollo 13 mission. I watched it on TV through the bars of a crib at my grandmother's house.

I remember Apollo 11 clearly, as it happened on or about my birthday. I recall the launch of Apollo 13, but I don't seem to remember the accident/tension at all.

I remember Uncle Walter babbling about Vietnam every evening on the news.

the oldest memory I can remember clearly is when I was about two or three dressing up in my mom's shoes instead of the Sesame Street house shoes she bought for me

Even as a baby, I was a shoe gal.
