North Carolina WR Tez Walker denied appeal, ineligible for '23

Walker and North Carolina have spent months appealing the NCAA's initial decision to reject his waiver to play in 2023 as a two-time transfer on multiple grounds: mental health challenges he has experienced, leading to his decision to transfer closer to home; and that he never played at his first school, NC Central, because its season was canceled as a result of the pandemic. His two previous schools, NC Central and Kent State, filed waivers in support of Walker playing this year. His final effort at getting eligibility went before a committee of NCAA Division I representatives Thursday.

North Carolina trustees mull options after Tez Walker denial

The North Carolina board of trustees held an emergency meeting Monday to discuss possible legal options to help wide receiver Tez Walker n his quest to play this season. The closed session was held four days after the NCAA denied Walker's last appeal for eligibility in 2023. Although the official agenda did not mention Walker by name, Tar heels coach Mack Brown told reporters at his weekly news conference that the meeting was called "to try to figure out all the best options" for Walker. "We need to all get in the same room and figure out what's best for the young man," Brown said. "These people are concerned and want to help him. I'm proud of that." On Jan. 11, two days after Walker began classes at North Carolina, the NCAA announced it would be cracking down on waivers for two-time transfers.

Amid an ever-shifting college football multiverse -- transfers, NIL, expansion and realignment that seem to change more frequently than the staircase at Hogwarts. An early look at the contenders for college football's most coveted award.

No.3: QB Drake Maye, North Carolina

The history of Tar Heels football has always been dogged by a well-earned "good but not great, but how in the world have they never been great?" reputation. UNC's absence from the national football stage is baffling for a school with endless athletic resources while residing in a talent-rich state.

In its trophy case. Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice finished second in the Heisman vote in 1948 and '49. Other than that, no Heel has even been in the conversation.

Tez Walker allowed to play after NCAA reverses decision on WR

North Carolina wide receiver Tez Walker will be eligible to play in 2023 after new information emerged that the NCAA said school officials "failed to provide" previously. Walker is a transfer from Kent State, and his initial eligibility for the 2023 season was denied because he had transferred twice. His case became a flashpoint for NCAA rules, in part because Walker hadn't played during the COVID-19 season of 2020 at North Carolina Central, which did not have a season because of the pandemic. Even with Walker's eligibility confirmed after months of public bickering, NCAA officials and UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham sparred publicly in statements Thursday in the wake of the decision. The NCAA said the "entire unfortunate episode could have been avoided" with timely submission of materials. Cunningham responded that UNC put forward the information as it was made available and said the NCAA "delayed making the correct decision."

Walker is eligible to join the undefeated Tar Heels for Saturday's game against Syracuse, and a source told ESPN that he is expected to play, as he has been practicing with the team. His snaps are uncertain at this point. The 6-foot-3 wide receiver hauled in 58 receptions for 921 yards and 11 touchdowns last season at Kent State.
The last previous ruling on Walker came Sept. 7, and it sparked criticism in statements from Brown and Cunningham. Brown said at the time that he didn't know whether he had "ever been more disappointed" in a group than he was in the NCAA. He ended his statement by saying: "SHAME ON YOU!" Cunningham called the decision "maddening, frustrating and wrong."

Tez Walker 'blessed' after 6 catches in North Carolina debut
North Carolina receiver Tex Walker made his long anticipated return to the field Saturday, catching six passes in a 40-7 win over visiting Syracuse. The saga between North Carolina and the NCAA lasted two months, as the Tar Heels put public pressure on the national governing organization to allow Walker to play this year.

******
The NCAA granted Walker immediate eligibility on Thursday, reversing course after initially ruling he would have to sit out this season as a two-time transfer. North Carolina determined that Walker would play but not start because he had spent the previous three weeks working with the scout team.
