Mountain West votes to play 8-game schedule starting in October
The Mountain West has three schools in California, where state and local regulations on gatherings had been restrictive until recently. New Mexico and Hawaii have had similar restrictions. As of Thursday afternoon, San Jose State had not submitted a return-to-play plan to Santa Clara County, which is required to be approved before the Spartans can resume practice, the county said in a statement to ESPN.

First College Football Playoff rankings pushed back week to Nov. 24

The first College Football Playoff selection committee ranking has been pushed back a week to Nov. 24, executive director Bill Hancock told ESPN. The date was moved from Nov. 17 after all 10 FBS conferences announced their intentions to play a fall season. The 13-member selection committee will announce its fifth and final ranking on Selection Day, Dec. 20. It will be the fewest number of weekly rankings during the playoff era because of the coronavirus pandemic. The top four teams will participate in the playoff semifinals Friday, Jan. 1, in the Rose Bowl Game and the Allstate Sugar Bowl. The national championship game will be played Monday, Jan. 11, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder III moving off Dec. 19; new date sought
"We're moving off because there's five conference championship games that day and night, plus two NFL games," Arum said. "So we can't go with the 19th; we're looking at other dates right now because ESPN advised us, and Fox advised the PBC [which promotes Wilder]."

Deontay Wilder parts ways with co-trainer Mark Breland
Breland is a respected figure in the sport, having captured an Olympic gold medal in 1984 and winning two major world titles as a professional. ESPN was not able to reach him for comment Friday.

Ryan Mutombo, son of HOFer, commits to Hoyas
Dikembe Mutombo was a two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year during his career at Georgetown before an NBA career that included eight All-Star Game appearances and four Defensive Player of the Year awards. He has the second-most blocked shots in NBA history. Ryan Mutombo's commitment means the sons of the three Hall of Fame centers who played at Georgetown in the 1980s and 1990s, Ewing, Mutombo and Alonzo Mourning will all have played for the Hoyas in college.

Five-star recruit J.D. Davison, ESPN's No. 2 point guard, picks Alabama Crimson Tide
Davison is the first five-star recruit for Oats since he took over at Alabama in 2019, and the first five-star prospect to commit to the Crimson Tide since guards Collin Sexton and John Petty headed to Tuscaloosa in 2017
