LOS ANGELES (AP) — In the first nine months of 2023, Sean “Diddy” Combs triumphantly performed at the MTV VMAs, released an R&B album that garnered a Grammy nomination and was a suitor to buy the BET network.

But several lawsuits filed late last year raised allegations of sexual assault and rape against Combs — one of hip-hop’s most recognizable names as a performer and producer. The music mogul's homes in Los Angeles and Miami were searched Monday by federal agents with Homeland Security Investigators and other law enforcement. Officials said the searches were connected to an investigation by federal authorities in New York.

The officials spoke to The Associated Press on conditions of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss details of the investigation. Combs’ attorney and other representatives didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, and his whereabouts are unknown.

Although Diddy was embroiled in one high-profile business dispute for part of 2023, it was a case filed by his former girlfriend and R&B singer Cassie that opened the door to other claims of sexual violence. Combs has vehemently denied the allegations. It is not clear whether the search is related to any of the allegations raised in the lawsuits, which include one from a woman who claims Combs raped her when she was 17.

Here are some things to know about Combs and the investigation.

WHO IS DIDDY?
Combs is among the most influential hip-hop producers and executives of the past three decades. He built one of music’s biggest empires, blazing a trail with several entities attached to his famous name. He is the founder of Bad Boy Records and a three-time Grammy winner who has worked with a slew of top-tier artists including Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, Usher, Lil Kim, Faith Evans and 112. The music mogul created the fashion clothing line called Sean John, was associated with a well-known vodka brand and launched Revolt TV network, which focuses on music and social justice issues targeting African Americans. He also produced the reality show “Making the Band” for MTV.

In 2022, BET honored Combs with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his ability to shape culture through his career. Combs won Grammys for his platinum-selling 1997 album “No Way Out” and the single “I’ll Be Missing You,” a song dedicated to the late Notorious B.I.G. who was killed earlier that year. He won another Grammy for “Shake Ya Tailfeather” with Nelly and Murphy Lee.

Last year, Combs released his fifth studio album “The Love Album: Off the Grid,” which was nominated for best progressive R&B album at February's Grammy Awards, which he did not attend. The album was his first solo project since his 2006 chart-topping “Press Play,” which had two top 10 hit singles: “Last Night” with Keyshia Cole and “Come to Me” featuring Nicole Scherzinger.

In 2004, Combs played Walter Lee Younger in the Broadway revival of “A Raisin in the Sun,” which aired as a television adaption four years later. He’s also appeared in films including “Get Him to the Greek” and “Monster’s Ball.”

WHAT SPARKED THE LAWSUITS?
In November, Combs' protege and singer Cassie sued him for alleging years of sexual abuse including rape. The lawsuit alleged he forced her to have sex with male prostitutes while he filmed them.

Combs and Ventura began dating in 2007 and had an on-and-off relationship for more than a decade. The suit was settled the day after it was filed, but the lawsuits against Combs kept coming against.

Combs had said in a December statement, “I did not do any of the awful things being alleged.”

In February, a music producer filed a lawsuit alleging Combs coerced him to solicit prostitutes and pressured him to have sex with them. Combs’ attorney Shawn Holley has said of those allegations that “we have overwhelming, indisputable proof that his claims are complete lies.” Another of Combs’ accusers was a woman who said the rap producer raped her two decades ago when she was 17.

The filings detail acts of sexual assault, beatings and forced drugging allegedly committed in the early 1990s by Combs, then a talent director, party promoter and rising figure in New York City’s hip-hop community.

ANY REPRECUSSIONS FROM THE LAWSUITS?
Last year, Combs stepped down as chairman of his cable television network Revolt amid the sexual abuse allegations against him.
Revolt announced Combs' decision via social media. It's not clear if he will ever return to the media company — which said Combs previously had “no operational or day-to-day role” at the network. “This decision helps to ensure that Revolt remains steadfastly focused on our mission to create meaningful content for the culture and amplify the voices of all Black people throughout this country and African diaspora,” the network said. The network had been preparing to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

Combs also created an online marketplace called Empower Global that featured Black-owned brands. The website for the curated marketplace is still active, but shows no products being sold.

WHAT HAPPENED WITH DIAGEO?
Earlier this year, Combs withdrew the lawsuit filed last year against Diageo as part of a settlement with the London-based spirits giant.

Combs said the company didn’t make promised investments in Ciroc vodka and DeLeon tequila — two brands Combs promoted in the past — and treated them as inferior “urban” products. He also accused Diageo of racism.

In court filings, Combs said Diageo leadership told him race was one of the reasons it limited distribution to “urban” neighborhoods. Combs said he was also told some Diageo leaders resented him for making too much money.

In legal filings, Diageo accused Combs of resorting to “false and reckless” allegations “in an effort to extract additional billions” from the company.

Combs’ reputation took a serious hit after the lawsuit was filed. Diageo became the sole owner of Ciroc and DeLeon after the lawsuit was withdrawn.

Has P Diddy Fled the US? What We Know

ean "Diddy" Combs, 54, could be facing a new set of legal woes after Homeland Security raided his homes, but some say he has fled the country. The hip hop mogul's homes in Miami and Los Angeles were raided just weeks after he was accused of sexual misconduct and alleged trafficking. But some tracking his private jet claimed it landed on the Caribbean island of Antigua after Combs was questioned by customs officials at Miami Airport on Monday evening, per TMZ.

Law enforcement officers raided Combs' mansion in the exclusive L.A. suburb of Homby Hills, which is also home to the Playboy Mansion. While Homeland Security did not confirm the reason for the raids, the Associated Press reported that two officials said it was part of an alleged sex trafficking investigation.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) said in a statement to media that it had "executed law enforcement actions as part of an ongoing investigation, with assistance from HSI Los Angeles, HSI Miami, and our local law enforcement partners." Combs was not spotted during the raids but was later seen at Miami Airport at about 6 p.m. in a video posted by celebrity news website, TMZ.

It showed him pacing around in a car park and some flight tracking experts later claimed his private jet was recorded flying to Antigua and Barbuda, but it is not know whether the music producer was on board or not. Serial celebrity private flight tracking expert, Jack Sweeney, posted the Gulfstream's supposed route from northern California, stopping in Los Angeles and then landing in Antigua at 10:21 p.m. ET, which is also the same time on the island. Sweeney posted the image to X, formerly Twitter, and claimed sources said Combs was not on board the flight.

"Diddy's jet N1969C flew to the Caribbean island of Antigua amid the trafficking investigation of him, but various sources confirmed that the rapper was not on board," he captioned the post.

Video captured by FOX11 news crews showed how armed federal agents arrived at one of the properties by boat and also appeared to show Combs' sons, Justin, 30, and King Combs, 25, in handcuffs near the home. It is understood the two men were not under arrest but were being detained outside as agents searched the property.

The Southern District of New York issued the investigation into Diddy and Newsweek contacted it by email for comment.

Singer Cassie, also known as Casandra Ventura, who dated Combs and last year sued him accusing him of abuse, rape and sexual misconduct, spoke out about Monday's raids through her lawyer.

"Hopefully, this is the beginning of a process that will hold Mr Combs responsible for his depraved conduct," attorney Douglas Wigdor said in a statement per the BBC.

Combs settled the lawsuit within days of Cassie filing it and was later sued by two other women accusing him of sexual abuse. He denied any wrongdoing.

Just weeks before Monday's raids, Combs was slapped with another lawsuit accusing him of trafficking and sexual misconduct. Music producer Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones said in the lawsuit that he was allegedly sexually harassed, drugged and threatened by Combs while working on the rapper's album, The Love Album: Off the Grid and is seeking $30 million in damages. Combs' attorney Shawn Holley denied the allegation and previously told Newsweek that "we have overwhelming, indisputable proof that his claims are complete lies."

All the famous people who appear in the sexual assault lawsuits filed against Sean Diddy Combs

Aaron Hall, an R&B singer who was part of the group Guy, was named as a defendant in a complaint filed against Combs last November in the New York Supreme Court ahead of the expiration date for New York's Adult Survivors Act, which provided a one-year window in which people could bring cases of sexual assault outside the typical statute of limitations.

The plaintiff, who is named Liza Gardner, accuses Combs and Hall of sexually assaulting her and a friend in Hall's apartment after a music industry event hosted by MCA Records in 1990 when she was 16 years old. She says Combs "coerced" her into having sex with him and that afterward, "Hall barged into the room, pinned her down, and forced" her to have sex with him too.

The plaintiff also alleges that Combs found her at her home and choked her until she passed out; he was worried his girlfriend would find out about the incident, the complaint says.
In one YouTube video cited in the complaint, Hall says in an interview that "Puffy" — what Combs was known as in the 1990s — had seen him have sex.

Hall could not be reached for comment. His lawyer was not yet identified in court documents as of April 8.

Music producer Harve Pierre

Music producer Harve Pierre was named as a defendant in two lawsuits filed against Combs ahead of the Adult Survivors Act's expiration date. Both lawsuits were filed anonymously, one in the New York Supreme Court and the other filed in the US District Court in the Southern District of New York, with the plaintiff listed as Jane Doe on both documents.

Pierre was Combs' first employee at Bad Boy Records, the former president of his Bad Boy Entertainment, and worked with artists like The Notorious B.I.G. and Faith Evans.

In the first complaint, filed in November 2023, a former employee of Bad Boy who worked as Pierre's assistant accuses Pierre of using his position of power "to groom, exploit, and sexually assault her." Combs and his companies enabled the abuse, the complaint says.

In a second lawsuit filed in December 2023, the plaintiff alleges that when she was 17 in 2003, Combs, Pierre, and an unnamed third defendant gang raped and sex trafficked her. Specifically, she alleges that Pierre smoked crack cocaine and then forced her to give him oral sex before bringing her from Detroit to New York City on a private jet.

In New York, at a studio owned by Combs, the defendants provided the plaintiff with drugs and alcohol before raping her, the complaint alleges.

Pierre's lawyer did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. He has denied the accusations made in the second complaint.

"This is a tale of fiction. I have never participated in, witnessed, nor heard of anything like this, ever. These disgusting allegations are false and a desperate attempt for financial gain," he said in a statement obtained by TMZ.

An amended complaint filed in March in the US District Court in the Southern District of New York by Rodney Jones Jr. — a music producer who goes by Lil Rod — lists Cuba Gooding Jr. as a defendant. Jones accuses Gooding of sexual harassment and sexual assault.

Specifically, Jones accuses Combs of grooming him to "pass him off" to Gooding. The two were left alone in a makeshift studio on a yacht rented by Combs, according to the complaint.

There, Gooding began "touching, groping, and fondling Mr. Jones' legs, his upper inner thighs near his groin, the small of his back near his buttocks, and his shoulders," the complaint alleges.

The actor previously pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of forcible touching.

Gooding's attorney did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
