Why Brittney Griner's peril is felt by all Black women in America

OP/ED: The conditions that brought the U.S. basketball player to Russia in the first place, and perhaps what have kept her there for so long, reflect the vulnerability that often comes with being a Black woman. When tennis star Serena Williams gave birth to her daughter in 2017, she nearly died because doctors did not believe her when she cried out in pain. As it turns out, Williams, the world's most famous athlete, was suffering from blood clots in her lungs. It would be hours before doctors agreed to do a CAT scan and rush to break up the clotting before it reached her heart. Despite all of her prestige and achievements, Williams was at the mercy of a medical system that is uniquely fatal for Black women. The state of powerlessness Black women, including Serena Williams, are relegated to is a phenomenon sociologist and author Tressie McMillan Cottom in her memoir "Thick: And Other Essays”. It "supersedes even the most powerful status cultures in all of neoliberal capitalism: wealth and fame," Cottom wrote.

Ben Crump Urging More NBA Players To Speak Out About Brittney Griner

Famed civil rights attorney Ben Crump is imploring more NBA players to speak out about Brittney Griner clearly believing their voices could help bring the WNBA star back to the States. The lawyer spoke with TMZ Sports out in D.C. earlier this week ... and he made it clear, if some of the Association's biggest names as well as others in the NFL, NHL, MLB and more keep raising awareness for Griner, it could help her in her drug case in Russia. "I think the NBA players should be saying more," the 52-year-old said. "I think that the sports world should be saying more." Crump obviously isn't feeling super optimistic that will happen, telling us he believes regardless of what goes down in the case, "She's being used as a political pawn."

Why Brittney Griner's peril is felt by all Black women in America

That's not hard to explain, nor is a thousand word article required in order to deliver that explanation:

Black women are culturally incapable of understanding that their actions have personal consequences for them. Every copypasta headline in this thread so far backs that up.

Not one headline comes anywhere near addressing the fact that the one person most directly responsible for the situation Brittny Griner is in right now is Brittny Griner.

The Russians didn't make her take pot into their country. Nobody made her do that. She did that. She is where she is right now because she didn't understand that taking drugs into another country just might run afoul of that country's laws -- or perhaps, more basically, that the law applies to her.

But that entitled, "I'on' gib a FUK!" attitude is a cultural trait common among black women. Brittny Griner hit that wall hard. Hard enough to make the rest of the herd nervous.

Best part of this bullshit thread is the fact that Wilson hasn't contributed to it ONE BIT. Just stealing other people's hard work while appearing to stand for something.

This racist asshole doesn't know shit about anything. Just acts like he does.

He thinks he's promoting "social justice" when all he's doing is grinding his cupcakeer stereotype into his face.

That's right Wilson, three pages of bullshit. As usual you got NOTHING

Rev. Al Sharpton stirs effort for Brittney Griner’s return amid WNBA All-Star festivities: ‘Bring Brittney home’

The Women’s National Basketball Players Association anchors its collective action in the 144 players represented by the union. But what happens when the 144 are missing one? Nearly five months after her arrest in Russia, Brittney Griner’s absence leaves a gaping hole in every aspect of this WNBA season. The All-Star Game in Chicago this weekend was the latest event marked by the international struggle to return Griner to the U.S. In a somber news conference Friday to commence All-Star weekend, Rev. Al Sharpton joined Griner’s wife, Cherelle, and WNBPA leaders Nneka Ogwumike, Sue Bird and Terri Jackson to highlight the qualities they believe make Griner’s return to the U.S. essential — her humanity, courage and identity as an American. “Bring Brittney home,” Sharpton said. “Bring her home to her wife. We are going to stand with her until you do. ... We know the tension between nations. We know there’s conflict going on. But we also know there ought to be a place where conflict stops and where the politics stop and the international rivalries stop and say some people operate above that and because they have, we will operate on a humanitarian level.”

Trump's GOP adds insult to injury as Brittney Griner remains jailed in Russia

Republicans, like Russia, seek to capitalize on the suffering of minorities for political gain.

Since Griner's arrest in Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport in February, her plight has become a highly publicized piece of American domestic political discourse. Initially, Griner’s family and team asked for privacy as they waited for the wheels of the State Department to work toward her release. Yet in the past few weeks, as her family and supporters have increased their public pressure on the Biden administration for her freedom, Republicans and conservatives have started to take advantage of the situation. Fox News’ front page features stories on Griner’s wife, Cherelle, with angles focusing on the Biden administration perceived failures. Republicans in Washington, meanwhile, have used her detainment to promote themselves and their former boss Donald Trump. The House Judiciary Committee tweeted an article on Phoenix Mercury coach Vanessa Nygaard and then used Nygaard’s comments to boast that Trump would have gotten Brittney released faster. Even as Republicans and Trump supporters use Griner to boost their agenda, they have also indulged in some classic victim-blaming.

Once in a while, media attention would sweep past like a searchlight: when he was arrested and charged with espionage in December 2018; when he went to trial 18 months later; when he was sentenced to 16 years; when the U.S. government said he had been wrongfully detained.
