Senators coach says organization members have recovered from coronavirus
Ottawa Senators coach D.J. Smith said on Wednesday that the members of the organization who tested positive for the coronavirus have recovered."The good thing is that everyone that had it didn't have horrible symptoms [like] what we're seeing on TV and [with] some of the people that have really struggled," Smith said in a video conference with reporters. "Some guys didn't feel well, but being athletes, they all got through it and they're all on the other side of it now," Five Senators players, radio color analyst Gord Wilson and one staffer all tested positive for COVID-19. Ottawa played games in San Jose, Anaheim and Los Angeles before the NHL paused its season on March 12. The Senators' game at the Kings was the final one played in the league before the season was put on hold.

The sports world has been at a standstill due to the coronavirus pandemic for roughly a month, and despite the widespread eagerness to restart games, a majority of Americans said in a recent poll they would not attend sporting events in person just yet. Some 72% of Americans polled said they would not attend if sporting events resumed without a vaccine for the coronavirus. The poll, which had a fairly small sample size of 762 respondents, was released Thursday by Seton Hall University's Stillman School of Business. When polling respondents who identified as sports fans, 61% said they would not go to a game without a vaccine. The margin of error is plus-or-minus 3.6%.

Despite the UFC pulling out all the stops to try to make it happen, UFC 249 will no longer happen April 18. On Thursday, UFC president Dana White told ESPN's Brett Okamoto that the card is off and all UFC events are postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. The main event was initially supposed to be Khabib Nurmagomedov defending his UFC lightweight title against Toney Ferguson in Brooklyn, but the coronavirus forced the event out of New York and Nurmagomedov got stuck in Russia due to travel restrictions.

Quebec's government announced Friday that no sporting events could be held through Aug. 31, though it left the door slightly open for pro teams. "At the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis we were hoping that the situation would be resolved in time to be able to host our tournament as initially planned on the calendar, but we knew that the chances were getting smaller and smaller in recent weeks,'' Montreal tournament director Eugene Lapierre said in a statement. "Our priority in the management of this crisis has always been to ensure the safety and well-being of our players, fans, volunteers, partners and employees. It is thus with a heavy heart that we received this news, but we understand that this decision was necessary.''
