Does facebook monitor messages?

I was sending a friend a link today and before I could send the message facebook asked me one of those things where you have to type the words you see on the screen.

I have never seen that before on there.

It's just a captcha designed to prove you're a human being and not a spam bot sending Facebook messages to everyone about a range of new hats.
