Edith Mary Tolkien

Tolkien's service at the Battle of the Somme was very difficult for Edith, as she feared that every knock on the door might carry news of her husband's death. In order to get around the British Army's postal censorship, John Ronald and Edith arranged a means for his letters from the trenches to contain coded messages. By deciphering the code, Edith was able to track his movements on a map of the Front.

That's pretty cool.
