Dak Prescott not sweating pace of Cowboys contract talks
If the Dallas Cowboys are in no rush to sign Dak Prescott to a long-term extension, then that's fine with the quarterback. Prescott said negotiations have not really begun with the Cowboys on a new deal, although he had what he termed a "great conversation" with owner and general manager Jerry Jones about a month ago. Prescott is entering the final year of a four-year, $160 million deal he signed in 2021 and is set to count $55.4 million against the salary cap. The Cowboys cannot use the franchise tag on him after this year, and he has a no-trade clause. In 2019, Prescott played out the final year of his rookie deal and was given the franchise tag in 2020. He suffered a dislocated and fractured right ankle in the fifth game of that season but still signed the most lucrative deal in franchise history.

Sources: Ezekiel Elliott, Cowboys reuniting with 1-year deal
Ezekiel Elliott has reached a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys that has a maximum value of $3 million, sources told ESPN on Monday, reuniting him with the franchise that took him with the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft. Elliott's return calls to mind Herschel Walker's second stint with the Cowboys. Walker was the Cowboys' leading rusher from 1986 to '89 before his famous trade to the Minnesota Vikings that helped Dallas turn into a three-time Super Bowl champion in the 1990s under Jimmy Johnson. He returned to the Cowboys in 1996, seeing action behind Emmitt Smith while being the lead kickoff returner. From 2016 to '22 with the Cowboys, Elliott ran for 8,262 yards. The three-time Pro Bowler set team rookie records with 1,631 yards and posted 30 100-yard games in his time with the Cowboys. He also led the NFL in rushing in 2016 and 2018 but has not topped 1,000 yards since 2020 (1,002).

Cowboys to decline Trey Lance's fifth-year option, source says
Unsurprisingly, the Dallas Cowboys will decline to pick up the fifth-year option on quarterback Trey Lance, a source told ESPN. That decision was essentially made in August when the Cowboys acquired Lance from the San Francisco 49ers for a 2024 fourth-round pick. Had the Cowboys picked up the option, it would have cost $22.4 million, been fully guaranteed and been at odds with the club's stated preference of keeping Dak Prescott after 2024. As it stands, the Cowboys do not have a quarterback on their roster signed beyond this season, with Prescott, Lance and Copper Rush set to hit unrestricted free agency in March. Ezekiel Elliott on Cowboys return: 'Got unfinished business'
When Ezekiel Elliott was introduced to the crowd at Riders Field before the Reliant Energy Home Run Derby Wednesday, it was as if Elliott was home again. Elliott signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday and has been part of the on-field workouts this week after spending last year with the New England Patriots. "It was just important to me just to get back here and finish what I started," Elliott said at the Cowboys' annual fundraiser.
"At the end of the day I'm a football player. I love this game," Elliott said. "I think I still am a dominant guy. I've got to go out there and prove that. That's a motivation. I think we all know how I feel about competing and leaving it all out there for my teammates." There will be one thing different in Elliott's return. His uniform number will change from the No. 21 he wore in Dallas to the No. 15 he wore in New England and at Ohio State. "I just kind of look at it as a different era," he said. But with the same goal as before. "Got unfinished business," he said. "Here to chase the ring."

NFC East 2024 buzz on Cowboys, Eagles, Giants, Commanders
History says there will be a new champion in the NFC East in 2024. Because it can't be the Dallas Cowboys, will it be the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants or Washington Commanders? Or can the Cowboys become the first team to repeat as division champion since the Eagles in 2003-04? It has been an offseason of change in the NFC East.
Washington has a new coaching staff, led by former Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, and took LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 pick in the draft.
The Giants have a new defensive coordinator and have been unwilling to say who will call plays on offense, while apparently sticking with Daniel Jones at quarterback.
Philadelphia has new coordinators for the second straight year, and head coach Nick Sirianni is under some pressure after an end-of-season collapse, while quarterback Jalen Hicks looks to reassert himself.
The Cowboys have replaced Quinn with Mike Zimmer, but they enter the season with coach Mike McCarthy and his staff in the final year of their respective contracts. And quarterback Dak Prescott, who finished second in the 2023 MVP voting, is also entering the final year of his contract.
Two years ago, three NFC East teams made the postseason (Eagles, Cowboys, Giants) and they all won a playoff game. Last year, two NFC East teams made the playoffs (Cowboys, Eagles) and neither won a game, while the Commanders and Giants struggled enough to end up with top-10 picks.

Dallas Cowboys schedule 2024: Takeaways, predictions
The Dallas Cowboys' 2024 schedule was released along with the rest of the NFL slate Wednesday. The Cowboys have their normal six prime-time games with three on the road and three at AT&T Stadium, including both games on ESPN's Monday Night Football, against the Houston Texans and Cincinnati Bengals. The bye comes in Week 7 for the second straight season, but it's sandwiched between two of what should be the more difficult games against last year's NFC Championship teams, the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers. Having that extra time to get ready to play the Niners is a good thing but is followed by a trip to Atlanta the following week, which makes for an interesting travel situation.
Strength of schedule: The Cowboys are tied for the 12th-hardest schedule in the league (opponents had a .505 winning percentage in 2023).
Bold prediction: The Week 17 meeting against the Eagles will be moved to prime time and will be for the NFC East championship. History is not on the Cowboys' side, since no team has repeated as NFC East champ since the 2003-04 Eagles. While the Cowboys have not made the moves many wanted in free agency -- anybody remember owner Jerry Jones' "all-in"? -- there is still a distance between Dallas and Philadelphia compared to the Giants and Washington. Imagine a cold-weather night game at Lincoln Financial Field? A ratings monster.
