A construction manager arrived at a job site in Valley Stream on Friday to find a noose hanging in the doorway, the latest public display of the symbol in Nassau County in the past month.

The noose was made of yellow electrical wire, said the manager, Michael Steward, who lives in Parkchester in the Bronx. Steward, who is black, said he believes he was the target but said he had no idea who was behind the incident. Still, he expressed outrage and disgust.

"This just shows me that hatred is still around, right on the surface," Steward, 48, said.

Det. Lt. Kevin Smith, a Nassau County police spokesman, said the incident is under investigation.

"We sent detectives down and crime scene units, and we're conducting an investigation," he said.

Steward is overseeing construction of a Men's Wearhouse building adjacent to the Green Acres Mall. The project began just four days ago.

Steward said he called his project manager, Micah Brown, in Rochester, who assured him that if the culprit works for the company and is caught, that person will be fired.

The incident follows the recent discovery of two nooses in the basement of a Hempstead Town garage, and a noose found last month in the basement locker room of the Hempstead Police Department.

And another...

A Brooklyn principal was shocked to open her mail Monday and find a letter laced with racist slurs - and a piece of cloth fashioned to look like a hangman's noose.
It was the latest in a string of bias incidents in the city, officials said.
The hate package contained racist rantings and was addressed to the office of Tyona Washington, 44, of Canarsie High School, a school where most students are black.
"It's very derogatory. It's very nasty," an NYPD source said of the graffiti-style scrawlings found with the noose, a powerful reminder of Jim Crow-era lynchings of blacks in the South.
The piece of cloth was about 3 feet long and tucked into an envelope, cops said.
