Season trends: Why Premier League teams are scoring more goals

Adrian Clarke analyses how managers' more attacking approach in 2023/24 is leading to more goals than ever.

Attacking football on the rise
It has been a richly entertaining start to the season, with the rate of goals scored per match higher than it has been for any previous Premier League campaign.

At present, we have had 370 goals, with each match is averaging 3.08. This is way above the previous best average of 2.85 set last season and puts the season on course to feature a total of 1,170 goals.

If achieved, that would be 86 more than last season’s record high.

Tactical positivity
From a strategic perspective we are seeing less of a fear factor from top-flight head coaches.

Fewer managers outside of the top six are setting up with back threes that turn into defensive five-man rearguards.

Manchester City, Chelsea facing relegation after Premier League bombshell

The English Premier League has been plunged into chaos after a move to dock a club 10 points prompted a wave of fear, anger and confusion.

Ten points lost for Everton and at least 10 new headaches for the English Premier League.

There has been a swift and dramatic fallout after Everton was found guilty of breaching financial fair play rules and handed the biggest sanction in the history of the competition.

The deduction plunged Sean Dyche’s side into the relegation zone on a total of just four points after 12 matches.

Everton said they were “shocked and disappointed by the ruling”, announcing their intention to appeal, but there’s now bigger concerns over what the decision could mean for giants Manchester City and Chelsea.

Why Everton points deduction sent shockwaves through the Premier League

An independent commission's decision to dock Everton 10 points for breaching Premier League financial rules could have seismic ramifications, and the fallout is being felt well beyond Goodison Park.

Stunned Everton fans may take some comfort from the sense they at least now know where they stand. But while the severity of the punishment meted out may have dismayed many, there is a very real danger that the situation facing the club could soon become even more serious.

The most obvious outstanding questions facing Everton are: whether the points deduction will ultimately condemn the club to relegation, and also, what the outcome of any appeal will be.

Premier League's biggest clubs enjoy flood of more late goals

You can't say we weren't warned. The first taste of vast amounts of added time came at the 2022 World Cup as FIFA moved to increase effective playing time, and this season it has hit the club game.

In Qatar, average stoppage time -- the total played above the allotted 90 minutes across both halves -- was 10:11 (10 minutes and 11 seconds), compared to 6:30 in Russia in 2018. That rise of 56.67% was partly due to the increase in available substitutions in a match from six to 10, plus possible concussion replacements, but also FIFA's drive to give the fans more football for their money.

Effective playing time -- when the ball is in play -- in 2018 was 55:41, while in Qatar it rose to 59:47, an increase of 4:06. Whether you thought FIFA was going too far by extending the clock, it was achieving its aim of getting the ball in play for close to an hour.

Man City 1-1 Liverpool: Champions have flaws - title race is wide open

From Manchester City's squad being stretched to Liverpool's new-look midfield still finding its way, Alex Keble analyses the tactical battle between the two managers in one of the BIGGEST modern-day rivalries in the Premier League.

A chilly and constrictive 1-1 draw didn’t quite live up to the pre-match hype and for that reason alone it is Liverpool, ending Man City’s 23-match winning streak in all competitions at the Etihad Stadium, who leave the more contented side.

This match-up is normally a chaotic end-to-end mess, but thanks perhaps to the early kick-off slot, the proximity to the international break, or perhaps deliberate conservatism from Jurgen Klopp, it was considerably less frenetic than usual.

Garnacho: It might be Goal of the Season

Alejandro Garnacho believes his acrobatic wonder strike against Everton is already one of the goals of the season, despite it only being November.

With only three minutes on the clock at Goodison Park, the 19-year-old produced a moment of magic for his first Premier League goal of the season, as he opened the scoring for Manchester United with an incredible bicycle kick, setting them on the way to a 3-0 win.

“I can't believe it to be honest," Garnacho told Sky Sports. "I didn’t see how I scored. I just listened to the crowd and said, 'Oh my god'.
