First three rounds of NFL playoffs averaged record 38.5M viewers​

The television audiences for the first three rounds of the NFL playoffs are the highest on record going back to 1988. According to the league and Nielsen, the first three weekends of the postseason averaged 38.5 million viewers on television and digital platforms, a 9% increase over last year.

The Kansas City Chiefs' 17-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens averaged 55.47 million on CBS, making it the most-watched AFC Championship Game ever. The previous mark was 54.85 million when the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the New York Jets to advance to the Super Bowl in the 2010 season. The audience peaked at 64.02 million. It was also CBS' most-watched non-Super Bowl program since the 1994 Winter Olympics in prime time on Feb. 25, 1994.

The San Francisco 49ers' 34-31 comeback victory over the Detroit Lions on Fox averaged 56.69 million, the most-watched NFC Championship Game since 2012. It is also the fourth most-watched non-Super Bowl telecast in network history. It peaked at 58.97 million during the fourth quarter. The 56.1 million average for the conference championships is an 11% jump over last year.

Madden NFL 24 sim has Chiefs beating 49ers in Super Bowl​

A year after the Kansas City Chiefs proved the yearly Madden NFL football simulation of the Super Bowl wrong, this time the franchise is hoping it'll be right. Madden NFL 24's official simulation has the Chiefs beating the San Francisco 49ers 30-28, giving Kansas City its second straight Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday. This a year after the sim predicted the Eagles to beat the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII. Madden's history with the Super Bowl has been inconsistent. The game also predicted the New England Patriots to beat Philadelphia in Super Bowl LII (the Eagles won), but it did correctly predict New England to beat Atlanta in Super Bowl LI.

Super Bowl 2024 survey - How fans will celebrate 49ers-Chiefs​

While the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs prepare to compete for all the marbles, football fans across the country are facing Super Bowl LVIII-related pressure of their own. On top of anticipating which song Usher will open with during his highly-anticipated halftime performance ("Burn" or bust), there's the added strain of logistics.

For that reason, ESPN worked with market researchers at SmithGeiger Group to poll fans during the final week of the 2023 NFL regular season to find out just how Americans will be celebrating the esteemed tradition that is Super Bowl Sunday.

• 2,049 Americans responded to our survey. Of those who responded, 74% said they plan to watch at least part of the game.
• Of those, 48% indicated male, 51% female and 1% nonbinary.
• Of those surveyed, 37% listed their age between 18-34. Age groups 35-49 and 50-64 both are represented by 31% of respondents
• The Dallas Cowboys (8%), Kansas City Chiefs (5%), Pittsburgh Steelers (5%), Philadelphia Eagles (4%) and New York Giants (4%) had the largest percentages of supporters polled.
• At the time of reporting, 6% of respondents said they were rooting for the Chiefs to win it all to 4% for the Niners.

Mahomes, Chiefs OK being 'villains' if it's price of winning​

The Kansas City Chiefs were booed loudly by fans when they were introduced at the Super Bowl's opening night on Monday. Maybe the reaction was skewed a bit by the presence of fans of the Las Vegas Raiders, one of the Chiefs' biggest rivals. But there seems to be fatigue among football fans over the success of the Chiefs, who on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers will play in their fourth Super Bowl in five seasons. The Chiefs have noticed. Defensive tackle Chris Jones has called the Chiefs "villains'' in the eyes of many fans. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes said disappointing those fans wasn't necessarily a goal of his. The Chiefs seemed to be a fan favorite when they faced the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV four years ago. Then, they were viewed as fresh participants. Indeed, that Super Bowl appearance was the first for the franchise in 50 years. In addition, the Chiefs had some stars new to the national stage, most notably Mahomes. But fans are now familiar with Mahomes, Jones and Travis Kelce.

Cowboys' early playoff exit 'embarrassing,' says Emmitt Smith​

Dallas Cowboys Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher, has made it clear in a number of interviews this week from Super Bowl LVIII that he is perplexed as to why Mike McCarthy is still the head coach.

"To be honest, I am a little surprised all because the way things have transpired over the last few years. Removing Kellen [Moore] and taking over the controls of the offense and so forth," Smith said on ESPN Radio. "I am a little surprised. The way our team exited out of the playoffs, I am real surprised. Because to me, I look to my leaders and leaders look to players to be ready and be prepared for the situations in all situations. And unfortunately for us, I don't know if we were as prepared as we needed to be.

The Cowboys, who won the NFC East and were the conference's No. 2 seed, were the only home team to lose in the wild-card round of the playoffs, getting hammered 48-32 by the Green Bay Packers at AT&T Stadium. The Cowboys were the only team last year to go undefeated at home in the regular season and had won 16 straight, their longest home win streak since 1979-80. The Cowboys have gone 12-5 in each of the last three seasons but have just one playoff victory, a wild-card win at Tampa Bay in 2022. They have lost two home playoff games under McCarthy.

Kyle Shanahan not worried about Super Bowl LVIII narratives​

With another chance to break through and win his first Lombardi Trophy just a few days away, San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan isn't spending any time thinking about what winning or losing Super Bowl LVIII will mean for him or the conversations that have surrounded his first seven seasons in charge. On Thursday afternoon in the basement of the 49ers' hotel, Shanahan was asked what losing to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday would mean for reinforcing the idea that he -- head coach of the Niners for Super Bowl LIV and two NFC championships, as well as offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons' Super Bowl LI run -- can't win the biggest game of all.

After a couple of difficult rebuilding years, the Niners surged to a Super Bowl appearance in year three before coughing up a 10-point fourth quarter lead to the Chiefs at the end of the 2019-20 season. The Niners have been within a game of the Super Bowl the past two years, conceding a late lead to the Los Angeles Rams in the 2021 NFC Championship Game and then falling to the Philadelphia Eagles last year after playing most of the game without a healthy quarterback.
Shanahan, 44, is only wrapping up his seventh season on the job but is widely regarded as one of the league's best coaches.

Niners wide receiver Jauan Jennings threw a TD pass and caught one, joining Eagles quarterback Nick Foles six years ago as the only players to do both in the Super Bowl. Niners coach Kyle Shanahan gambled on fourth-and-3 from the Chiefs 15, passing up a chance for a tying field goal. Purdy hit George Kittlle for a 4-yard gain and then found Jennings for the score. Jennings, a wide receiver who had never thrown a pass in an NFL game, tossed a 21-yard TD to McCaffrey. Shanahan fell to 0-2 as a head coach in Super Bowls and 0-3 overall, including a loss when he was offensive coordinator for Atlanta.

Kansas City

The 28-year-old Mahomes becomes the fourth starting QB to win three Super Bowls — joining Brady, Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw and Troy Aikman — and second-youngest. Mahomes wasn’t at his best early and threw an interception. But with the game on the line, he was a magician once again. He finished 34 of 46 for 333 yards and two TDs. Mahomes and Reid are now halfway to Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, who won six championships in 20 years together with the New England and were the most recent team to go back-to-back following the 2003-04 seasons.
