Diamondbacks' Gallen, Rangers' Eovaldi get World Series Game 1 nods

Zac Gallen posted a 17-9 record with a 3.47 ERA in 34 games during the regular season. He led the Diamondbacks in wins, strikeouts (220) and innings pitched (210). He struck out 11 and allowed one run in six innings of a 6-3 victory over Texas on Aug. 22. He is 1-1 with a 3.57 ERA in three career appearances versus the Rangers.

Nathan Eovaldi, a Texas native who signed with the Rangers last offseason, will make his first career World Series start. The right-hander is 4-0 with a 2.42 ERA in his four starts this postseason, including the AL Wild Card Series and AL Division Series clinchers, and the must-win Game 6 of the AL Championship Series at Houston on Sunday night. He has a 2.42 ERA in four starts this postseason. He won Games 2 and 6 in the series against the Asros and is unbeaten this postseason. The 33-year-old Eovaldi is 8-3 with a 2.87 ERA in 15 career postseason games, including 10 starts.

Former President Bush to throw out World Series first pitch

Former President George W. Bush, the former Rangers owner, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Texas plays the Arizona Diamondbacks in the World Series opener Friday night. This will be Bush's fourth World Series ceremonial first pitch, but his first before an opener. Bush, 77, headed the group that bought the Rangers from Eddie Chiles in 1988 and was general partner through November 1994, when he stepped down as he prepared to become Texas governor. Bush was U.S. president from 2001 to 2009 and threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Game 3 of the 2001 World Series at Yankee Stadium between New York and Arizona. With heavy security following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Bush wore a bullet-proof vest.

Roof closed for World Series opener between Texas and Arizona

The Globe Life Field roof will be closed for Game 1 of the World Series between the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks. Major League Baseball announced the decision about 5½ hours before the opener Friday night. The forecast called for temperatures in the low 70s with a chance of thunderstorms. For the neutral-site 2020 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays, the Globe Life roof was open for Games 1, 2 and 4, and closed for Games 3, 5 and 6. Arizona's Chase Field in Phoenix also has a retractable roof, leading to the possibility of the first all-indoor World Series. While the home team controls the roof decision during the regular season, MLB makes the call during the postseason. Texas played 11 games with the roof open during the 2023 regular season, the last on May 21. The season opener against Philadelphia on March 30 began with the roof open. But rain began during the third inning and the roof was closed during the top of the fourth. The roof was closed for three of the Rangers' four previous postseason games this year, the exception for a 10-3 loss to Houston in Game 4 of the AL Championship Series.

UNC-Wilmington Alum Bonifay, Rangers Prepare For World Series

As the leaves turn colors and 28 teams have seen their season come to an end, UNCW alum Josh Bonifay and the Texas Rangers take the field on Friday for game one of the World Series against the up-start Arizona Diamondbacks. Bonifay, who is in his second stint with the Rangers and his second season in his current position, isn't on the field, but his work and dedication are showing up on it as he serves as the Rangers Director of Player Development. A native of Asheville, N.C., Bonifay played for UNCW from 1997-99 while splitting time between the infield and outfield. He finished his career with 21 home runs and started 111-of-113 games played for the Seahawks. He still ranks among UNCW's single-season leaders in several offensive categories. Bonifay is looking to be the second Seahawk to win a World Series as UNCW Hall of Famer and current Cleveland Guardians pitching coach Carl Willis did so with the Minnesota Twins in 1991.

García's HR in 11th, Seager's tying shot in 9th rally Rangers past Arizona 6-5 in Series opener

Adolis García took a few steps while watching the ball before tossing his bat aside after another big swing this postseason. This one won an extended Game 1 of the World Series for the Texas Rangers. Once his drive cleared the right-field wall in the bottom of the 11th, two innings after Corey Seager's tying two-run homer, García thrust his right arm high into the air as he started a trot around the bases that ended with him being mobbed at home plate — and a 6-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks to start this surprise World Series of wild-card teams Friday night.

Rob Manfred touts unpredictability of new MLB playoff format

While MLB commissioner Rob Manfred is willing to discuss and evaluate the league's new playoff format, now two years old, his overall view is that it's been a good thing for baseball. But Tony Clark, executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, isn't as convinced. The topic came up before Game 1 of the World Series, which pits the 84-win Arizona Diamondbacks against the 90-win Texas Rangets. All three 100-win teams -- the Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves, were eliminated in the divisional round. Manfred pushed back on that notion, emphasizing the beauty of unpredictability come October. Last season, the final four teams left in the playoffs included two wild-card teams and two division winners. This year, three wild-card teams were among the final four, with only Houston making it to the league championship series as a division winner.

Diamondbacks' Chase Field roof open for World Series Game 3

Chase Field's roof was open for Game 3 of the division series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and closed for Games 3, 4 and 5 of the Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. After coming out of the bullpen in Game 2 on Saturday, Texas Rangers left-hander Andrew Heaney will start Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday night. The veteran will be opposed by Arizona Diamondbacks opener Joe Mantiply, as both teams are likely to use several relievers to get through the night. Heaney is filling in for Jon Gray, who was supposed to start but was called into action in Game 3 when Max Scherzer left early with back tightness. World Series Games 2 and 3 were least-viewed in Fall Classic history

The fears of this year's World Series between the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks becoming the least-viewed Fall Classic in TV history are becoming a reality. Games 2 and 3 are the least-watched on record according to Nielsen. Monday's 3-1 victory by the Rangers averaged 8.13 million on Fox, according to fast national figures. Saturday's 9-1 Diamondbacks' win averaged 8.15 million. Before this year, the least-watched World Series game was Game 3 in 2020 between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays, which averaged 8.34 million. Game 1 was also the least-watched World Series opener recorded. The three-game Los average of 8.48 million is on pace to become the least-viewed Series ever, fewer than the 9.79 million in 2020 that watched the Dodgers beat the Rays in six games. Game 3 went up against "Monday Night Football" for the first time since 2013. However, it was the first time since 1996 that the World Series and NFL were both on network TV on a Monday night.
