It was dumb because it was another nail in the coffin. I wouldn't even want to see anymore of the Firefly universe without Wash or Book in it. Still a good movie, though.
Wash died because he was in a loving relationship and that's not allowed on a Whedon show (he needs to change that policy, it's getting stupid now), I'm guessing Book died because the actor didn't want to do any more Firefly stuff (since he was only in the movie for five minutes.)
From what I can tell, the guy who played Book enjoyed being on the show. Maybe he was just really busy tying his hair back when they were filming all the other scenes. All those comedic pauses after jokes are the bits when he was supposed to say something about preaching or the Alliance.
Well the reason Whedon wanted to cut down the number of characters is that nine main characters are fine for a TV show, but far far far too many for films, so if there were to be more Serenity films (which is more likley than a TV series) it would be easier to write and to watch with a smaller amount of main characters.
