I'm familiar with the books, but I just don't remember them being so damned preachy.

Movie was too long, and the best thing about it was the kick ass trailer when I thought it was going to rock. Fuckers.

If you judge it on "how well was the comic literally translated to the screen frame for frame", then it works very well on that level, and that seems to be enough for some people.

If you judge it on "how well it works as a film independent of the comic", then it's overlong and missing a lot of the subtleties of the comic, and is horribly paced for a film.

I haven't read the comic or anything but decided to get this tonight.....I express the same sentiments as mm, I wanted to turn it off after the first 5 minutes. I have enjoyed the music however. Still watching.
