Haven't read any of his other stuff, but KJA's Last Son of Krypton was pretty good. He's no Peter David, but he's ok.

Should I have ever heard of this KJA?

I read a lot of sci-fi and recently finished the wonderful Alastair Reynolds novel "the Prefect." My kinda dish: not to heavy on the science, not too heavy on the drama, lots of action.
 
Well, you'd only have heard about Kevin J. Anderson if you like really badly "written" sci fi, or if he's raped one of your favorite science fiction series (DUNE).
