Gays are fine just so long as I do not have to witness their gayness. Watching two guys kiss is little different than watching some dude jerk has wang. Since I do not want to see either, I am glad it never showed up in Star Trek, and commend Berman on resisting the LGBT mafia.

I have no problems with girls kissing in a way that is hot for guys to watch, but the proliferation of the token lesbian on every single recent TV show annoys me. I would like to watch a new homophobic show that does not portray all the characters having constant constant sex. Does this exist?
 
What a boring, cliched post. I'm hoping you're just playing an internet character when you say stuff like that.
 
Yeah, I'm glad Star Trek only included HETEROSEXUAL hardcore porn scenes. Anything else would've been highly inappropriate.
 
But I really don't want to see two guys making out in my entertainment, and I'm not interested in progressive social messages either. Star Trek to me was never about social progress or acceptance of black/female/bald persons in prominent positions, it was about crazy characters, absurd scifi bs, shit blowing up, and Ezri's cocktail dress. IMO the idea of a perfect Utopian human society was a liability to Trek, not one of its better attributes (though it was mostly a TNG and VOY thing).

Seriously, having a prominent gay couple on Star Trek would be like having to listen to Tasha Yar's drug speech to Wesley every episode. I get it, drugs are bad, gays are normal, I don't care. I'd rather see something interesting.

Such a relationship, male or female, would have added nothing to Star Trek except needless pandering/controversy. Honestly, would anyone even want to remember "Rejoined" if Lenara was male? What a stupid episode, they even somehow managed to make the kiss completely not hot.
 
The Tasha Yar drug speech was one of the worst written speeches from one of the worst seasons of Trek, delivered by one of the worst actresses. It's not really comparable to casually showing that homosexual relationships exist in the 24th century (MAYBE THEY FOUND A CURE FOR GAYNESS LOL), which with decent writing could have been done as easily as showing heterosexual relationshps. I didn't particularly want to see Odo and Kira kissing but I wouldn't have complained about it just because I found the actors unattractive (of course I thought the Odo/Kira relationship story was pretty poor anyway once they got together but that's not the point.)

But I'm a fan of all the evolved sensibility, optimistic future stuff anyway so...
 
Star Trek has decent writing now? Imagine if B&B actually did try to shove a male homosexual relationship in one of their shows. It would be portrayed so terribly that the next show make it a point to never speak of gay again. You know, kind of like what happened with Janeway. By the time Enterprise came around, it was all WHITE MALE WHITE MALE WHITE MALE. And they still fucked it up.

DING. That's what a lot of people look to Trek for, which is how issues like this come up in the first place. We look to Trek to see how the issues we still face today got resolved in order for us to become space citizens. And they really skimped on this issue.

Further, nobody is saying they wanted to see gay love scenes in Trek shows. I just wanted to see some acknowledgment that there are still gays in the future, and that it's no big deal to humans anymore. Roddenberry was brave enough to show an interracial kiss on TV in the 60s, but Berman, who had the benefit of 30 more years of social progress, couldn't have a male character get up from his chair in 10 Forward and say his husband was waiting for him with dinner on the table. I really don't think that's too much to ask, nor would it have incited you to vomit or throw things.
 
How often would throw away bullshit like that have to be done to make people happy? I doubt an offhand mention of some dudes husband a single time in Ten Forward would satiate anyone. Berman would simply be accused of lazy pandering, which would in fact be the case.

I doubt the Gay Trek community would be truly happy until they have a main character that is openly gay, bringing with it the inevitable Yearly Gay Episode.

Anyways, being a fan of the happy Federation circle jerk is one thing, but do you guys really watch Star Trek mainly for that ridiculous premise?

I would be far more interested in this if they actually showed or explained how we resolved our issues. As far as Trek cannon is concerned, we were all brutal savages until Spocks grandfather shook that drunk guys hand, then within the course of like...10 years or something, all the cultural problems that have plagued humanity since the dawn of time magically disappeared. That's deep, really.

The lack of gay was the least of Trek's evolved humanity issues.

Though you guys should really read some of the recent Trek books, they are just packed full of gay.

I seriously used to think Shatner was gay when I was younger. I always thought he had a certain mannerism about him that was a bit feminine. Obviously I was mistaken, he likes women...women young enough to be his granddaughter.
 
Maybe it was the guyliner he wore in TOS that did it.

Dystopian Sci-Fi is a dime a dozen. Trek's Utopian ideal is one of Trek's defining attributes and has never been a detriment to the show. Utopia's need to be sustained and they are not taken for granted in Star Trek. Quite the contrary.

The fact that there has never been any "exploration" in to homosexuality in the 24th century beyond two hot chicks briefly kissing is a major cop out really. Equality is a big part of the ethos of Trek so to blatantly avoid it on a show like Trek is not about simply not pandering to the Gay Agenda but to avoid a huge aspect of society that should have been addressed. Practice what you preach and all that.
 
Alot of programs from the last decade/before had a huge tendency to avoid the issue at hand so not too offend certain people like the christians,ect. If Star Trek was written today I think theres more open mindness among people that if properly written could work.
They may not show the gay couple making out but could otherwise suggest in holding hands, conversation, facial expressions & so forth. THe writers would have to avoid all the stereotypes that the media & society has held on homosexuality. I think with good writers,actors in todays world it could be done. The trick is getting writers,ect with enough guts to do a big storyline arch. It is something I wouldn't mind seeing as I believe in equal rights for every race & sexuality.
 
Enterprise only got canned about two years ago, unless times have moved on signficantly in the last 24 months, they could have adressed it then.
