Why do so many people say they believe in GOD

Then they don't go to church every Sunday (if at all).

They do not practice what the bible preaches, for example:
They are not kind to other people
They curse
They steal
They LIE
They have sex out of wedlock
They cheat on their spouses

I mean the list goes on & on...& on...and yet, people do all of these things & more & they still say they believe in God? I think if people REALLY believed in God & didn't just say they did, then they would practice what they preach.

Religious believers are sooooo hypocritical!

They will be the first to tell me i am going to hell for being gay & they preach about family values & quote the bible often, but they can lie, cheat, steal, commit adultery & God will forgive them?

I'm not trying to make this into a gay thing, that's just one example. I do not believe in God or religion. Even spirituality in general is all in the mind IMO. But what I DO NOT get is how people can say they believe in God & then go around committing sins all the freaking time. So is committing sin ok then as long as you believe in God and one day plan on getting around to asking for his forgiveness?? Makes no fucking sense to me!!

I just love it when people say "no, i don't go to church, but i believe in God"...um, yeah, ok, whatever! Isn't part of believing, going to church & following God's laws? Some of the most miserable, mean spirited fuckers i have had the displeasure of meeting claimed to be very religious. I had a boss once who went to church several times per week, but she would yell & belittle people at work...very christian like wouldn't you say?

Hell, my own Grandma was a literal devil to her 6 children when they were growing up, but in later years mellowed out a bit & went to church & donated money to them all of the time, yet she died a few years ago without ever saying she was sorry (or asking forgiveness) to 1 of her kids for the way she treated them. I remember asking her about abusing her kids (my dad mainly) & she got real defensive & denied it. According to her she never did any wrong by her kids, yet they ALL tell a very different story.

I don't think you can be truly religious & believe in God & just do whatever the fuck you want to. But so many self proclaimed religious people seem to do it all of the time.

AMEN:jesus:!!

Maybe the god they believe in is the old testament, petty, vicious, jealous, vindictive, judgmental, murderous, selfish god.

You can still be a good person, believe in God and not go to Church. That describes me. I hate those devout Christian holy roller nut jobs. Preaching fire and brimstone and how sinful everyone is.

Thats I think part of the current stress between me and my parents. They're devout Catholics(or so they claim). I can't even be the real me in front of them. I can't tell them about my crossdressing, pot smoking or discuss 95% of the "sinful" TV shows I watch. I have to pretend to be a goody goody two shoes so I can avoid lectures on how sinful I am. Hell my aunt(now dead) was a nun.

And probably nothing you do or say will make them accept your differences. That's the problem with people who have been fucked in the head with religious beliefs, they just open the bible & quote numerous passages to try to prove everything you do is a sin.

I love you, Henny. Despite your love for Voyager.

Thanks. :)

BTW, I've been up all night trying to get through season 3 of Voyager. I just recently watched all of seasons 1 & 2. I've only ever watched all of seasons 4-7 before. I've seen scattered episodes from the first 3 seasons prior. My favorite seasons are 4-7 when Seven of Nine is on the show. I don't know why so many people hate Voyager, it is at least as good as TNG...a bit better overall IMO. I still like TOS & TNG a lot & watch selected episodes often.

Star Trek has the right perspective when it comes to religion, they pretty much put their faith in technology.

It's because they're scared of dying.

I was going to say "fear" generally. Fear of the fact we might just be organic matter, with no soul developed by a fluke on this one planet. Fear of death is about right.

I remember as a kid looking at the congregation in the church and thinking how the older you were, the closer they seemed to be getting to the front of the church. It was like a desperation as the inevitable onset of time reminded them of their mortality.

But I am also drawn to the Steven Weinberg quote
With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil — but for good people to do evil — that takes religion
I would go further, I am not sure that using religion to support an evil point can ever really be a "good person" they are more likely stupid and afraid of your [insert here] sexuality, race, viewpoint, etc.[ /insert ]

Religion is, indeed, the self-consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again. But man is no abstract being squatting outside the world. Man is the world of man—state, society. This state and this society produce religion, which is an inverted consciousness of the world, because they are an inverted world. Religion is the general theory of this world, its encyclopedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritual point d'honneur, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, and its universal basis of consolation and justification. It is the fantastic realization of the human essence since the human essence has not acquired any true reality. The struggle against religion is, therefore, indirectly the struggle against that world whose spiritual aroma is religion. Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people. The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is the demand for their real happiness. To call on them to give up their illusions about their condition is to call on them to give up a condition that requires illusions. The criticism of religion is, therefore, in embryo, the criticism of that vale of tears of which religion is the halo.

I VISITED YOUR GRAVE!

C.S. Lewis would have something to say about that!

"Whoever has the blood of theologians in his veins, stands from the start in a false and dishonest position to all things. The pathos which grows out of this state is called Faith: that is to say, to shut one's eyes once and for all, in order not to suffer at the sight of incurable falsity. People convert this faulty view of all things into a moral, a virtue, a thing of holiness. They endow their distorted vision with a good conscience,--they claim that no other point of view is any longer of value, once theirs has been made sacrosanct with the names "God," "Salvation," "Eternity." I unearthed the instinct of the theologian everywhere; it is the most universal, and actually the most subterranean falsity on earth."

-Friedrich Nietzsche

Even the Ten Commandments are Old Testament -- Jesus boiled them down to love your God, and love your neighbor...and that's all you need. Truly enlightened Christians should be able to get by with just this alone.

But the Churches wouldn't want that, because then they'd be out of business. Most religions crave lots of hierarchy and infrastructure. They think they need power, land and access in order to preach. This of course, is actually man's baser desires infiltrating his faith, and screwing up what should be a very simple belief system.

True Christians probably shouldn't go to church at all!

Matthew 6:5-8 said:
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Not exactly, Sausageman. I think you missed the point of what he was trying to say. Context is pretty important. He was talking about the Pharisees who stood in public making a huge show of their piety, not the act of attending a congregation. It was the same point he made in the previous verses when talking about charity:

Matthew 6:1-4

6 “Take good care not to practice YOUR righteousness in front of men in order to be observed by them; otherwise YOU will have no reward with YOUR Father who is in the heavens. 2. Hence when you go making gifts of mercy, do not blow a trumpet ahead of you, just as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be glorified by men. Truly I say to YOU, They are having their reward in full. 3. But you, when making gifts of mercy, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, 4. that your gifts of mercy may be in secret; then your Father who is looking on in secret will repay you."

What the hell is a truly enlightened christian? The terms are mutually exclusive. Impossible.

And they don't make a huge show of their piety in the church?

I will make a huge show of my piety, but you'll all have to send me $50.
