Favourite bands

SO MANY GREAT BANDS.
You could say Eclectic is my middle name.
OK, just sticking to bands and quickly without taking too much time:

sampling from my iPod -
Foo Fighters,
Old Crow Medicine Show,
Live,
Rammstein,
Figgy Duff,
U2,
English Beat,
B-52's,
Johnny Clegg and Savuka (and Jaluka),
Medieval Babes,
Moxy Fruvous,
Gorillaz,
Steeleye Span,
Rolling Stones,
Chemical Brothers,
Delhi to Dublin.
and stopping now!

My problem is I do listen to more artists than bands, which is why I lump them all together.

Today it warmed up to 75 and it was gorgeous outside.

Journey
The Steve Miller Band
Eagles
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Jethro Tull
Chicago
Lovin' Spoonful

the list goes on ...
dah, de, dah, de, dah

I appreciate talented musicians generally as individuals, so many of what I call "bands" are actually loosely affiliated groups that play together frequently enough but don't always have an official label. Their sound often has a distinctive note that can be detected and identified even if the name changes.

1. Susan Tedeschi/Derek Trucks groups (which includes the Allman bros band etc)
2. Led Zeppelin
3. ABBA-bullshit you know you like them too.
4. Fleetwood Mac, pretty much every incarnation but the very last one.
5. Greenday- quietly has become a seasoned Rock act. If you live to get veteran status, can you still call yourself punks?
6. Tom Petty, including all his various solo and outside projects. His talent overpowers pretty much any group he's in, so it all counts.
7. Eagles. And all assorted side projects of same. How many frigging superstars can you fit into one group anyway?
8. Beatles. I include Harry Nilsson in this group despite his unfortunate personal story simply because he was closely associated with both John and Ringo and only circumstances and untimely death prevented a larger body of crossover work.
9. The Doors. Lightning in a bottle, and one of the few bands that can claim musical genius with a straight face.
10. U2. Yeah, they're overexposed and melodramatically political at times, but you can't argue with the body of work.
11.Clapton/Cream/Blind Faith et al. Anything Clapton put his name on was fantastic by his contribution.

I have many more favorites, these are just some of my top picks. Most of them are older bands comparatively speaking; not because I only like "Classic" but more because I am very slow to admit someone has true staying power and talent. Any idiot can make a single or an album that blows up...look at William Hung or the Beastie Boys.

Eloisel, I'd like to see some pics of you too. I don't know how hot you are but I do know you're older than the hills so I'm thinking you're probably gray and hairy, maybe even down to the knees. Mid thigh at any rate. I'm also thinking you've been on the board long enough to put up or shut up which means I'm also thinking I'd settle for full bush if you make me. TDW.

The Mills Bros.
The Rippingtons
Hiroshima
Weather Report
Fourplay
Steely Dan
Take Six
The Manhattan Transfer
The Highway men
The Beastie Boyz
NWA
The B52s
The Style Council

...and a few more I'll probably not get back to you on until I poke about grooveshark.com but we'll see.

Nice.

I'll admit it: I went to Meryl's Mamma Mia wanting to hate it, and I loved it.

It was tough getting used to her and Pierce Brosnan singing, wasn't it? Anyway, the original group really did put out some fantastic arrangements and lush sounds, they just got swept up in the rise and fall of disco music. Guilt by association even though what they did was much closer to genuine music than the other disco era offerings.

I really listen to too few exciting new bands.

Edan
dead prez
Pete Rock
Prince Paul
Deerhoof
The Knife
Godspeed You! Black Emperor (do they even count as "new" now?)
Black Moth Super Rainbow (lol)
Jay Electronica

I'm also big on Parliament/Funkadelic, the Orb, Curtis Mayfield, the Doors, Sylvester, and Rick James.

(no wigger)

As US Grant said: I am tone deaf and know two tunes. One is Yankee Doodle and the other isn't.

In no particular order:

The Avett Brothers
ABBA
Bon Jovi
The Jam
Queen
The Weavers
Peter, Paul and Mary
U2
The Monkees
Green Day
Bee Gees (their early stuff)
Grass Roots
Stryper
Styx

...and a plethora of '60's bands, most of which you've never heard. :)

Cream
Moody Blues

I should be shot for forgetting:

7 Year Bitch
Sonic Youth
L7

The Mills Bros.

Hiroshima
Weather Report
Fourplay
Steely Dan
Take Six
The Manhattan Transfer
