After weeks of poring over scouting reports, launching Zoom conference calls and reviewing medicals, teams have done the legwork for this week's NFL draft. Now comes the fun part: exchanging notes and potential trade ideas over the phone.
During the next few days, general managers will sit in their home offices and consult peers they trust, piecing together which teams are comfortable dealing and which players will spark a positional run. With 40 trades executed during last year's draft, moving up and down a draft board is as much a part of the event's fabric as ceilings and late risers. One spot to keep a close eye on is late in the first round, when players -- especially quarterbacks -- who have slipped a few spots can spur action. Because first-round rookie deals include a fifth-year option, that entices teams to package a deal and jump back into Day 1 proceedings. This explains why Lamar Jackson is on the Ravens. Two years ago, Baltimore bundled two second-round picks and a fourth-rounder to move up 20 slots, selecting Jackson No. 32 overall. That worked out pretty well. Minnesota did something similar in 2014 with Teddy Bridgewater, moving up eight spots to select him 32nd.

Manning, who was the No. 1 overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 1998 draft, sais Sunday on SportsCenter that Burrow recently called him for advice on being a rookie quarterback. Burrow, who won the Heisman Trophy and a national title last season with LSU, attended Manning's Passing Academy last summer. Manning pointed out that he lost more games in his rookie year than he had in his high school and college careers combined, but it was a valuable learning experience.

Sources: Niners open to trading 1st-round picks in NFL draft

Roger Goodell: NFL draft now gives sports world hope
The NFL moved ahead with a virtual draft during the coronavirus pandemic because it wanted to provide hope to a sports world in need of it, commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday. "People look to us for optimism," Goodell said during an appearance on ESPN's Get Up. He added: "They look to us for bringing communities together. I think the draft is a great example of that, with restoring hope. It's hope for our fans. It's hope for our teams. It's hope for our players, for these young men who are about to start their careers as prospects and players in the NFL. That's what this is all about, and I think we need those diversions. I think we need that focus on the future and that way to bring communities together. I think we'll be able to do that for the next three days, and then we'll focus on the future immediately after that."

Vikings entertaining trade offers, GM Rick Spielman says
With draft picks at No. 22 and 25, the Minnesota Vikings are entertaining trade offers two days ahead of Thursday's first round. "I've had calls already, opportunities of people trying to trade up, and I've also had teams that are in front of us that wanted to trade back," general manager Rick Spielman said on Tuesday. "I think it all depends how the draft board unfolds on Thursday. For example, I would say if we stay at 22, and we have maybe seven or eight names still up there, to move back from 25 to gain another pick and still get the same quality of player. An example: Last year, we moved back three times in the third round and still had Alexander Mattison targeted and were able to still get him. A lot of that manipulation on the draft board depends on what's up there, how you have the draft board stacked and how far are you willing to go back without risk of losing a particular player."
