Williams' 3 TDs help No. 18 UNC pull away from Syracuse 31-6
Sat, Sep 12:

North Carolina opened a high-expectation season with a fast start and a strong finish, sandwiched around a run of mistake-filled play. And all of it came amid the unusual backdrop of section after section of empty seats. Javonte Williams ran for three fourth-quarter touchdowns to help the 18th-ranked Tar Heels pull away and beat Syracuse 31-6 on Saturday, winning in an empty home stadium after the school opted to open with no fans in attendance due to the coronavirus pandemic. After a game-opening touchdown drive, the Tar Heels (1-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) sputtered with turnovers and penalties before ultimately settling into a rhythm to look like the team expected to be a contender in the ACC race.

No. 12 North Carolina holds on to beat Boston College 26-22
Oct 3, 2020

North Carolina safety Trey Morrison stepped in front of the 2-point conversion attempt and saw a path to the other end zone, 99 yards away. He went for it, and sealed a long-awaited victory for the 12th-ranked Tar Heels. Morrison intercepted Phil Jurkovec's pass on the potential game-tying 2-point play and ran it back for a score with 45 seconds left Saturday to help North Carolina beat Boston College 26-22 for its pandemic-delayed second victory of the season. With the cancellation of one game because of the coronavirus and a scheduled off week leaving North Carolina idle since Sept. 12, the Tar Heels (2-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) sent BC (2-1, 1-1) to its first loss under new coach Jeff Hafley. Jurkovec completed 37 of 56 passes for 313 yards and two touchdowns, hitting tight end Hunter Long nine times for 96 yards. Boston College, which led the ACC in rushing last year behind A.J. Dillon's third straight 1,000-yard season, totaled just 40 yards rushing.

Virginia Tech Hokies without 15 players vs. North Carolina Tar Heels; DC Justin Hamilton returns

Virginia Tech was without 15 players against North Carolina on Saturday, including starting safeties Divine Deablo and Keonta Jenkins. In addition to missing its starting safeties and three other key contributors in the secondary, Virginia Tech lost starting nickelback Chamarri Conner after he was ejected in the first quarter for targeting on North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell. This is the third straight week the Hokies were significantly short-handed, though the school has not specified whether players are out because of injuries or coronavirus-related issues. Virginia Tech was missing 21 players against Duke last week and 23 players in its opener against NC State.

Book, defense help No. 2 Notre Dame beat No. 25 UNC 31-17

Ian Book kept scrambling to buy time and help No. 2 Notre Dame put together multiple long touchdown drives. The Fighting Irish's defense allowed little room for Sam Howell and No. 25 North Carolina's potent offense to do the same. Book threw for a score while the Fighting Irish defense locked down the Tar Heels for the final three quarters in a 31-17 victory on Friday. The win kept Notre Dame on course to earn a spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. UNC finished with a season-low 298 yards while Howell one of the national leaders in passing yardage and touchdowns threw for just 211 yards and a score. He also ran for a touchdown.
