Howell accounts for four TDs as Tar Heels hold off Miami

Sam Howell threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as North Carolina held off Miami 45-42, sending the Hurricanes to their worst record at the midway mark of a season in more than two decades. Howell was 17 for 26 for 154 yards in the air with an interception while running for 98 yards on 17 carries. Chandler gained 104 yards on the ground on 18 attempts. Howell's touchdown runs covered 30 and 11 yards, both times pinballing off Miami defenders.

North Carolina football lands five-star OT recruit Zach Rice, No. 13 prospect in 2022 class

North Carolina added five-star offensive tackle Zach Rice to its 2022 class on Wednesday. Rice chose the Tar Heels over his finalists that included Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Virginia. He's a 6-foot-6, 285-pound tackle out of Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg, Virginia, and is the No. 13 ranked recruit in the class. Rice is the No. 3 tackle in the class and the top recruit in the state of Virginia. He had taken visits to all of the schools on his list, but chose North Carolina in the end. His commitment gives the Tar Heels at least one five-star commitment in each of the last three classes. Five-star defensive back Tony Grimes and defensive end Desmond Evans signed in 2020, defensive end Keeshawn Silver in 2021 and now Rice in 2022.

Chandler, Tar Heels rally past No. 10 Demon Deacons, 58-55

For the second straight year, Wake Forest couldn't protect a big second-half lead at North Carolina. This time, though, it likely cost the 10th-ranked Demon Deacons any chance of playing their way deeper into the College Football Playoff race. Ty Chandler ran for career highs of 213 yards and four touchdowns and North Carolina overcame an 18-point deficit to beat Wake Forest 58-55 on Saturday, handing the Demon Deacons their first loss in a nonconference matchup of Atlantic Coast Conference teams. It ended with the unusual sight of Tar Heels fans storming the field to celebrate a win against their instate foe, though not one that will count toward the league standings.Howell threw for 216 yards and a touchdown and ran for 104 and two more scores in a matchup of high-profile quarterbacks. And the Tar Heels scored on their last five full drives, four for touchdowns.

Pickett, No. 25 Pitt escape Howell, UNC 30-23 in OT

A rare mistake by Kenny Pickett nearly cost No. 25 Pittsburgh. The senior quarterback turned darkhorse Heisman Trophy candidate made up for it by doing what he's done so often during his record-breaking season: make something incredibly difficult look incredibly easy. Pickett atoned for a late interception that allowed North Carolina to force overtime by firing a strike through a downpour at soggy Heinz Field to tight end Lucas Krull during the first possession of overtime for an 11-yard score that put the Panthers back in front. More than 30 NFL executives — from scouts to general managers — turned out to watch two quarterbacks expected to hear their name called pretty early in next year's draft.

Without Howell, North Carolina runs over Wofford, 34-14

Playing without quarterback Sam Howell, North Carolina ran for 305 yards to beat Wofford 34-14 on Saturday, becoming bowl eligible in the process. Howell, who was a game-time decision, missed the first game of his career due to an upper-body injury suffered against No. 20 Pittsburgh last week. Jaccolby Criswell started for the Tar Heels and threw for 125 yards, adding 66 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Freshman Drake Maye took over after halftime and finished with 89 yards. The Tar Heels (6-5, 3-4 ACC) never trailed in a Senior Day win where they held the Terriers (1-10, 0-8 Southern Conference) to 242 total yards and rode a ground game that scored three times.

North Carolina Tar Heels beat out Clemson Tigers for ESPN 300 wide receiver Andre Greene Jr.

North Carolina got a big recruiting win on Wednesday when ESPN 300 wide receiver Andre Greene Jr. announced his commitment to the Tar Heels. Greene, the No. 100 prospect in the 2022 class, chose North Carolina over Clemson and #1 Georgia. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound receiver from St. Christopher's School in Richmond, Virginia, held offers from some of the biggest programs in the country. With Greene in the class, North Carolina has 10 total ESPN 300 commitments and five ranked in the top 150. That includes five-star offensive tackle Zach Rice, the No. 13 recruit overall; Shaw; wide receiver Tychaun Chapman; and running back George Pettaway.

No. 24 NC State stuns NC 34-30 with 2 TDs in 26 seconds

Devin Leary threw two touchdown passes in a 26-second span, with No. 24 North Carolina State recovering an onside kick in between, to stun North Carolina 34-30 on Friday night and remain alive in the ACC Atlantic Division title chase. N.C. State (9-3, 6-2) beat North Carolina (6-6, 3-5) for the first time since 2018 to remain in contention for a trip to the conference championship game. It also officially eliminated six-time reigning league champion Clemson from the Atlantic Division race. The Wolfpack would reach the title game if No. 21 Wake Forest loses at Boston College on Saturday, creating a three-way tie atop the division that would favor N.C. State by virtue of its division record and head-to-head win over Clemson.
