North Carolina Tar Heels QB Drake Maye apologizes for jab at NC State Wolfpack: 'It was inappropriate'​


North Carolina freshman quarterback Drake Mage apologized Tuesday evening for taking a shot at rival NC State earlier in the day, saying that his remark was meant as a joke but was "inappropriate." Maye, while meeting with the media to discuss the Tar Heels' upcoming game on Saturday against Notre Dame, was asked about the success of his predecessor, Sam Howell, during his time with the program. Like Howell, Maye also grew up in North Carolina and elected to stay in-state and play for UNC. In his apology, which was posted to Twitter, Maye wrote, "I made a remark today about NC State, and I want to apologize. I was answering a question about playing in-state and said something I shouldn't have. I said it as a joke but it was inappropriate. I feel bad and need to do a better job representing our program and this University."

Pyne clicks as Notre Dame powers past North Carolina​


Drew Pyne threw three touchdown passes and Notre Dame finally clicked on offense in a 45-32 victory over North Carolina on Saturday. Audric Estime rushed for two touchdowns and 134 yards and Chris Tyree ran for 80 yards and a score for the Fighting Irish (2-2). Pyne completed 24 of 34 passes for 289 yards. The Tar Heels (3-1) were denied their first 4-0 start to a season since 1997. North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye threw five touchdown passes, two going to Josh Downs in the first half and two more covering 144 yards to Antonio Green in the second half. Maye was 17-of-32 for 301 yards. Notre Dame, which has a scheduling agreement with the Atlantic Coast Conference and played as a league member during the pandemic-impacted 2020 season, has won 25 consecutive regular-season games against ACC opponents. This was the first of four meetings against ACC members this year.

Maye’s big day leads North Carolina past Virginia Tech 41-10​


Drake Maye threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to continue his strong start to the season and North Carolina opened up Atlantic Coast Conference play with a 41-10 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday. Maye, a redshirt freshman, was able to consistently throw downfield, with 13 of his 26 completions going for at least 15 yards. He finished with 363 yards, going 26 of 36. Josh Downs led UNC (4-1, 1-0 ACC) with eight catches and 120 yards, and tight end Bryson Nesbit added 98 receiving yards on four receptions. - Grant Wells completed 16 of 26 passes for 139 yards and ran for a touchdown, but the Hokies (2-3, 1-1) struggled overall against a Tar Heel defense that turned in its best performance of the season.

North Carolina holds on at the end, tops reeling Miami 27-24​


Tyler Van Dyke more than got back on track. It still wasn't enough for Miami to knock off Drake Maye and North Carolina. Maye passed for 309 yards and two touchdowns, one of them a 74-yarder to J.J. Jones, as North Carolina overcame a huge effort by Van Dyke to beat Miami 27-24 on Saturday and move atop the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division. Josh Downs had a receiving touchdown and Omarion Hampton ran for another score for North Carolina (5-1, 2-0 ACC). Van Dyke completed 42 of 57 passes for 496 yards, the second-most in Miami history, behind Stephen Morris' 566 in 2012 and three touchdowns for Miami (2-3, 0-1).

Maye finds Green late, lifts UNC past rival Duke 38-35​


North Carolina's late comeback came down to a final handful of seconds — and only a few blades of grass. Drake Maye connected with Antoine Green for an 8-yard score with 16 seconds left that stood up on replay review, lifting the Tar Heels past rival Duke 38-35 on Saturday night. Maye threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Tar Heels, while Josh Downs had nine catches for 126 yards that included a couple of spectacular grabs. Leonard threw for 245 yards and a touchdown to go with a 74-yard scoring keeper to lead the Blue Devils. Jordan Waters ran for 91 yards and two scores.

Maye's 5 TDs lead No. 21 North Carolina to 42-24 win vs Pitt​


Drake Maye threw for five touchdowns and Antonio Green had a career night with 180 yards receiving as No. 21 North Carolina overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half to defeat Pittsburgh 42-24 on Saturday. UNC (7-1, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) is 4-0 in league play for the first time since going 8-0 in 2015. Green, a fifth-year senior, hauled in a pair of touchdowns and set career highs in yards receiving and receptions (10). The loss was Pitt’s second straight, and the Panthers (4-4, 1/3 ACC) are 1/3 in their last four games after starting 3-1.
