virginia law allows schools to psy for nil
The new law, which is scheduled to take effect July 1, is the first in any state to make it illegal for the NCAA to punish a school for compensating athletes for their NIL rights. Current NCAA rules prohibit schools from signing NIL deals with their own players. The law could either give Virginia schools a significant recruiting advantage or provide a catalyst for similar changes elsewhere.

Cavinder twins returning to Miami for final season

Haley and Hanna Cavinder are returning to Miami for their fifth and final season of collegiate eligibility, they announced on social media this week. The twins helped Miami in 2023 reach its first-ever Elite Eight in their first season there after spending three years at Fresno State. They are among the biggest beneficiaries of name, image and likeness policies, capitalizing on their pandemic-era explosion in fame on TikTok to build an extensive NIL portfolio. Both Cavinders originally intended to step away from basketball following their senior year and pursue a new chapter of their lives, including opportunities with WWE, but Haley announced in Nov. 2023 she had committed to play at TCU beginning in the 2024-25 season. On Wednesday, Hanna posted that she would be returning to basketball and finish her career at Miami Haley, the 2021 Mountain West player of the year, earned second-team All-ACC honors in 2022-23, averaging 12.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, while Hanna averaged 3.8 points per game in a reserve role in her first season in Coral Gables.

Unfair labor complaint filed against Notre Dame over athletes

An unfair labor complaint was filed Thursday against the University of Notre Dame for classifying college athletes as "student-athletes." The complaint was filed with the National Labor Relations Board by a California-based group calling itself the College Basketball Players Association. It said Notre Dame is engaging in unfair labor practices as defined by the National Labor Relations Act. The complaint is similar to one filed against University of South Carolina last May by the NLRB's Los Angeles office alleging players on USC's football and men's and women's basketball teams are employees and not "student-athletes" within the meaning of the National Labor Relations Act.

Judge orders Florida State, ACC to mediation to settle suit

A Tallahassee judge has ordered Florida State and the Atlantic Coast Conference to enter mediation in hopes of settling a high-profile lawsuit that could dramatically impact the future of the league. Judge John C. Cooper technically approved the ACC's motion to dismiss Monday but gave FSU seven days to amend its complaint because the university needs more specificity regarding key facts in a case he said "is worth up to half a billion dollars." The conference would have 20 days to respond afterward, and another hearing would be set. The Seminoles are pushing to exit the ACC and explore a more lucrative landing spot, potentially the Big Ten Conference.

The hearing Monday was the latest in dueling lawsuits lodged in December. They include back-and-forth arguments pertaining to jurisdiction, a highly guarded grant-of-rights agreement between member schools and the league, and a confidential TV deal between the ACC and ESPN. The ACC's revenue increased to nearly $617 million during the 2021-22 season, with an average distribution of nearly $39.5 million per school for full members. Still, that leaves ACC schools receiving about $10 million a year less than SEC schools even though ESPN is partnered with both leagues in broadcast deals. Clemson, another ACC school, has joined FSU in challenging the ACC's right to charge hundreds of millions of dollars to leave the conference.

Former Duke guard Jeremy Roach commits to Baylor

Duke transfer Jeremy Roach, arguably the best point guard in the transfer portal, announced his commitment to Baylor. Roach entered the portal Tuesday night, and it wasn't long before Baylor emerged as the favorite for the senior guard. Arkansas, St. Johns, Kentuvky, Villanova, Syracuse and others were quickly linked to Roach, but Scott Drew and the Bears won out. Roach made his announcement in a post on Instagram. A 6-foot-2 Virginia native, Roach started 108 games over four seasons with the Blue Devils, earning third-team All-ACC honors as a senior. As a senior, Roach averaged 14.0 points and 3.3 assists while shooting 42.9% from 3-point range -- all career highs. He scored in double figures in all four NCAA tournament games, with Duke getting knocked out by NC State in the Elite Eight.
