I just downloaded and installed a shit-ton of cool apps.

I'm juiced.

I'm tired and not sure what I want to do. I started watching Lost then I paused it and came back here to post some inane babble.

I don't know why I do it to myself.

You could write a one-page outline of a term paper comparing historical deviation in Julius Caesar and Macbeth so I could get some sleep.

I should be getting to sleep for work tomorrow but I haven't even taken out my contacts yet.

I'm considering poppping in Delores Claiborne to fall asleep to. I caught Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle earlier and now I'm in a Jennifer Jason Leigh mood...

That's a rather boring subject to broach. There is a lot more of interest to write about especially as comparison pieces and the power struggles and stylistic formality of Julius Caesar compared to Macbeth. Not that Shakespeare is ever that thrilling to write about unless you're a masochist.

But historical deviations? Well, Duncan was not a respected king in real life. He was a twat and not a successful King at all. Alternatively, Macbeth was a great King and was nothing like the way he was portrayed in the play. The placement and the players are mostly right but he fits it all into place with little regard for the true story.

As for Julius Ceaser... good luck..

Or do they want you to compare the way he used artistic licence between the two?

Because that's just cruel.

Earlier tonight when Katherine Hepburn's Mary of Scotland was about to air on TCM, movie guru Robert Osborne commented that scholars have yet to come across a film treatment of the Tudors and Stuarts that they find historically objective and accurate to their satisfaction. I was considering looking up some good, concise sources in order to get such an objective account of those times...any ideas?

Didn't have much choice. We've been on the topic on and off for the whole year, possibly because that's what the guy based most of his career on. I'm getting fucking sick of reiterating how Macbeth was a great guy and actually legitimate.

Yeah, you won't find a movie that does it justice. Flagrant use of artistic licence is used at all times.

I'm sure there are some good websites out there and there are of course hundreds of books on the subject. I just recently read this which is good:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/History-Britain-Edge-World-BC-AD/dp/0563384972

And the TV show was good as well.

If you have the History Channel then just look for gruff bearded English men talking in fields and you're on the right path when you're skipping channels.

it's putting it all in context which is tricky. Because reading about any one era needs to have the context of the previous and following events. Which can be daunting.

There are some good sources on the history of the monarchy and even Wikipedia is pretty decent in that respect since they are usually surprisingly accurate.

What a career choice!

Stick it through. I left school at 15. I would kill to go back and do it properly now. It would have saved me years of self motivation to learn and read myself if I had been forced into it.

I was lucky enough to spend some quality time up in Stratford and went to the RSC quite often and watched a LOT of Shakspeare plays which helped a lot though.

I even spent a stint printing Shakespeare cards with quotes and ink prints of different scenes from various plays when I was working in Gloustershire. EXCITING!

Just write "SHAPESPEARE JUST MADE SHIT UP!!!!!!!" but with more exclamation points.

he could do that, and then he could look forward to taking the course all over again!
YAY Shakespeare!! :D

I gave up a loooong time ago trying to sit down and enjoy a "historical" movie out of Hollywood...

*rant mode*
If props and costume are supposed to add verisimilitude to these bloody movies, then one would think TPTB would spend the money on someone who actually studied that shit!! I mean, they have mazillions to spend on these productions - couldn't they send some the way of some detail-obsessed historian? Bastards.

*end of rant mode*

btw, anyone catch the wristwatch in Gladiator? bwahahaha!!!
