A "Debate Off"

Ha, Number_6 won't debate you! He's a big pussy!

He talks and talks about how stupid liberals are, but when he has to back up his bluster, he turns tail and runs away like the big cowardly sourpuss that he is!

We can debate the existence of your penis, Wordin. Certainly that's something still up for debate.

*snicker*

Sorry I couldn't help it... and I needed a good laugh tonight! ;)

Education doesn't really eradicate racism. Oh, it makes racists less likely to express their racism, but it doesn't eradicate it.

What eradicates racism is experience. And the university, as it is currently designed--by which I mean the rampant Balkanization that characterizes the modern university--does little to bring the sort of experience necessary to eradicate racism to those students most likely to be racists.

We have fucked up, and in a big way, by abandoning the idea that we all have certain human universals in common. Instead, we focus only on those things that make the other Other, perpetuating racism, sexism, etc.

So you are suggesting that the education system emphasize our commonality, as opposed to our differences?

Your stand on multiculturalism is well known. I put forth that by exploring our differences, we realize that we have more in common than first thought.

How do you propose the modern university expand students' experience to eradicate racism? Lessons on the civil rights movement? Study of other cultures?

Watch it, Number_6, that sounds alarmingly like multiculturalism to me.

I don't propose that the modern university do anything. In fact, I think that we were doing far better at progressing beyond racism and other societal ills when the university was simply doing its job, i.e., teaching English, history, etc. Wisdom was put on offer without being shoved down students' throats, and tolerance was real, rather than the product of fear.

As for the brand of multiculturalism being practiced in education today, it rarely if ever moves away from our differences to our commonalities, because its main purpose is to elevate other cultures at the expense of our own.

And, with that, I know exactly who you are, "Friday".

Number_6 is only a dick when provoked into being a dick. The direction this board has taken in the last month has been definite provocation. Anyone with an acronym in their signature is fair game until proven otherwise.

And I wish I could find my statement profound, instead of depressing. There was a time when I thought learning everything I wanted to learn was possible. Now simple math makes it appalling clear that there just aren't enough free hours left to me to read the things I thought I'd be able to read.

Your sometimes short fuse is infamous. But Number_6 wouldn't be who he is without it. It is enjoyed by some. :)

The realization of one's own mortality. Gee whiz, I wish I was old enough to understand that.

Oh, c'mon, Number_6. The username itself should have told you. I would have been disappointed if you didn't figure it out. ;)

So how do you explain our nation's segregation laws up until the civil rights movement? Weren't they in effect during, according to you, the "Golden Age" of higher education?

If I recall, it was the liberal left that was instrumental in getting these laws off the books.

Not elevate. Educate...explore....find common ground.

And, with that, I know exactly who you are, "Friday".
Pleased...or disappointed? ;)

I'm sorry, my dear, my penis is not a subject we will be debating. I don't know why you and some other conservatives on this board are constantly trying to talk to me about my penis or my sexual partners or whatnot, but I'm not into that sort of thing. If you want to talk about penises, go to some seedy chat room full of your own kind.

Relax Wordy. I'm sure they were just trying to keep the conversation centered on the things you are the most familiar, and intimate with.

This forum is not for Fags and Hippies.

Which means I am leaving as I am a hippie.

I'm willing to overlook that little fault so long as you promise to always shower before going into the kitchen.
