RAVENOUS

"A quirky psuedo-horror film which takes place in 1847 California. A handful of soldiers at a desolate military outpost, high up in the Sierra Nevada mountains, encounter a mysterious Scotsman and learn the old Indian legend of the Wendigo, which states that a man who tastes the flesh of another steals that man's strength, spirit and essence. The film stars Guy Pearce (Where's he been lately?), Robert Carlyle (Begby!), Jeffrey Jones (before he got nicked for pedophilism and kiddy porn) and Neal McDonough."

Ha! The playful soundtrack (composed by Michael Nyman and Damon Albarn (of Blur and Gorillaz)) was an excellent counter-balance to the subject matter! Without it, the movie would almost have been TOO dark and disturbing.

I love this movie, too. It's probably the best thing David Arquette's ever been in!

That fucking movie is amazing, just came out on DVD for like 8 bucks. What a piece of work.

^ Here's a couple brief synopses I found on-line:

Made in 1961 on an extremely low budget, Herk Harvey's classic CARNIVAL OF SOULS has become legendary for it's ability to create a tensely creepy atmosphere with virtually no special effects. A young woman (Candace Hilligoss) is involved in a car crash when her car falls off a bridge while drag racing with some friends. After she pulls herself from the river, she moves to a new town to take a job as a church organist. Meanwhile, a distinctly eerie and hollow-faced man seems to be following her wherever she goes, while an abandoned lakeside amusement park beckons her with an almost gravitational pull. The effective organ score enhances the film to great effect, as do the bleak landscapes of Utah's salt flats.

***

A true forgotten masterpiece. Carnival of Souls, industrial filmmaker Herk Harvey's only feature, somehow uses everything that should work against it to it's favor. The handheld camera work, the simple sound mix, and the amateurish acting only add to the film's unreal tone. The movie is never scary, but always atmospheric and creepy. It was very influential, too. Both George A. Romero and David Lynch admit to borrowing inspiration from this movie.

***

It's the original shoestring budget B-movie... long before the micro-budgeted horror flix NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE EVIL DEAD, and THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, there was CARNIVAL OF SOULS.

If you get this, pick up the 2-disc Criterion Collection version. It has a superior video transfer and includes historical information/photo-documentary of the abandoned (and later burned down) Saltaire Pavilion amusement park outside of Salt Lake City where scenes for the "carnival" were shot. Fascinating stuff. It also has a decent commentary track.

I rented the CC version a few years ago and it was awesome, but the version I own is a low-rent cheapo version w/ HORROR HOTELl (starring Christopher Lee) packaged on the flip side of the same disc.

TONIGHT:

BUBBA HO-TEP!

^TEH BRUCE as TEH KING!

(The late) OSSIE DAVIS as JFK! (Trust me.)

Hell, the commentary track, where TEH BRUCE plays TEH KING, in character, commenting on the ACTOR (Bruce Campbell) who played him in the move is worth the price of admission alone!

AND, I hear they're working on a sequel, baby: BUBBA NOSFERATU: CURSE OF TEH SHE VAMPIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tonight's was Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera" (2004)

Not bad. Not really scary, but thoroughly enjoyable.

One of the best movies ever made IMO! Truly magnificent!

this scary because?

Must see, horror/comedy! It's Elvis and JFK vs. an Egyptian soul-sucking mummy!

As for scary: "Be warned – Bubba Ho-Tep has some overly crude parts, especially regarding Elvis having a growth on a lower extremity that requires a nurse to administer ointment."

YEARGH!!

Did she play the part of "Christmas Present" in Scrooged ?

No, that was Carol Kane. (Miracle Max's wife in TEH PRINCESS BRIDE!)

Madeline Kahn... was... incomparable.
