Technology v magic
Technology
The fences have been in place since the 60s, we know that from Ben’s age, and the VW vans.
The failsafe genuinely sent Desmond’s soul back into his body at an earlier point in his life, giving him a chance to change things, and when he got back, he sees possible futures, its possible this is a form of telekinesis, which in itself is magic, but seems to have been created by technology.
The tech in the hatches is old, the tech in the others village is newish, they have CDs and microwaves.
Magic
Walt could project himself astrally, make animals appear, and affect the weather.
The smoke monster could be either technology or magic, but its ability to read minds and even project images from those minds seems more like magic.
Jacob appears to be a ghost, or a poltergeist, which is clearly magic or the spirit world, but on the other hand he could be a victim of a similar tech that transformed Desmond.
Richard, he doesn’t seem to age, and we know this ability isn’t tied into the island as he can leave without reverting to his original age, as we saw him in Portland.
Of course this could also be technology, maybe he doesn’t age because he’s a robot, but I tend to think he came on the black rock, and somehow became immortal.
The healing power of the island certainly seems more like magic than technology, as its selective in who it heals.
Dharma may have brought technology to the island, but it’s the islands magical powers that attracted them in the first place.

I read somewhere that the producers are claiming there's a tech reason for all these things, and they are still firmly denying the purgatory/hell theories. Can't wait to see what they come up with to explain Jacob being invisible.
One of those Lost websites had something about Casimir studies, but I haven't even looked at anything else to do with the Lost experience, so I don't know if that was even a real Lost thing.

Jacob = Smoke Monster/Island Gaurdian? Hmm?
They've pushed the boat out so far on some plot points a real world/near future scientific answer would be fucking lame.
At the same time they do keep saying that it is science as opposed to the supernatural.
They better have something REALLY clever up their sleeve because coming up with cool plot points that don't need answers is easy.
Ultimatley this entire show is about the pay off at the end when we find out what the fuck is going on.
