Spoilers for Heretics and Chapterhouse.. and the hated sequels:
If you read Heretics and Chapterhouse then you know the Honored Matres were running from someone or thing when they came back from the scattering.. Pinky and the Brain (Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson) wrote that the ancient enemy was a sentient computer that escaped the Butlerian Jihad. I can't remember the name of this computer but it's also a gay computer, lol. They also bring back to life all of the main characters of Dune, because *Skytale has a capsule with all their DNA implanted in his skin.
I do not recommend the prequels or sequels.. unless you like to be disappointed. BH and KJA are only average writers and can't even come close to the awesomeness that is Frank Herbert.
*In Chapterhouse FH does in fact have Skytale on the giant no-ship with a capsule containing DNA of these people. If only he'd been able to write the sequels himself!
