because home made soap (which incidentally have a ph rating of 7-8 at 24 hours, not bad as saponification does not complete for 72 and most soaps rate 9-10) has 25-30% glycerine in them, and that is very good for nice soft skin.
Of course, commercial manufacturers extract it and sell it to the food industry as well as the lotion industry, where, if you check, the ingredients are listed first as water, with fats and glycerine making up far smaller amounts.
why buy cheap soap when you then have to go out and pay for watered down glycerine too? it's uneconomic.
Besides, coffee soap smells good.
