The WB made one of the most brilliant programming moves the last season of "Angel"--and then wasted it by canceling the show. The initial format didn't really excite me--I'd never really gotten into the whole "Buffy" thing--so the idea of a spin-off left me cold. Then they completely changed the show, so he wasn't a detective, hunting monsters--AND put it on after "Smallville". AND that season was, for me, the year "Smallville" had officially become unwatchable.
So I'd turn on "Smallville", get bored with it, and go fuck off on my computer. "Smallville" would end and I'd be in another room, so "Angel" would start up. Eventually I heard enough cool dialog that I decided to go back in the living room and see what the show was about.
I got hooked on it about a month before they canceled it.
I doubt Wheddon has had much involvement in it, even though it's "plotted" by him. He hasn't written any of the issues. I can't imagnie they'd have a huge fucking reset button after 16 issues/episodes on the show.
