Anime recommendation, pree.

Hey all...

Picking out a title from the wall-o-anime at the local art-house video store is daunting to say the least. I was hoping those of you more in the know than myself might find it in your interest to listen to a couple criteria and then make a recommendation.

The anime that turns me on is realistic, story driven work that has a certain plausibility to the visuals on screen. Films like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Wings of Homennese (sp?) go for more of a human look to the characters, instead of the "cartoonish" look most anime has... not nocking it, of course, but I just don't get too far behind the huge eyes and crazy hair.

So what are some titles that kinda fit into the "realist" theme? I'm not talking about realism with regards to setting or actions... those can be as far out as they want to be. I would just like to get off on the story as much as fabulous art.

Thing is, I really do love anime... but I find it hard to wade through the slew of titles available. I'll download or rent something only to find it's a little too, well, unrealistic.

That's a laugh riot, now that I think about it. I EXPECT REALIZMS IN MY ANIME - ESPECIALLY THE MOVIES ABOUT FOURTY FOOT DEMON COCKS SPEWING PINK DEATH INTO THE SKY.

Hmmm...tough call. You've already seen my favorites.

I hear "Ninja Scroll" is good, and I suspect it would fit your bill of requirements. Haven't seen it myself.

Last anime I saw was "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust," and I was underwhelmed.

Thanks for the recommendations... I already own Ninja Scroll... I should have said.

Grave of the Fireflies sounds good, if a little depressing. WWII in Japan with the bombs dropping... I'd get a little down.

Have you seen Tokyo Godfathers? Really good story with a good twist.

We should get Rommie in on this thread.

Steamboy, a very good movie by Katsuhiro Otomo, the man who did Metropolis and Akira. Expect a spectacular story and some good animation.

Sayuki is another good one. An anime adaptation of "Journey to the west" The four main Characters are great; Genjou Sanzo a priest who drinks, smokes, swears and carries a gun, Son Goku the Monkey king who follows Sanzo around and has a black hole for a stomach, Cho Hakkai the mediator with a troubled past (he seems to be the most stable of the group) and Sha Gojyu a water demon who cant swim, has aquaphobia but the most incredible luck ever. Storyline is a bit wierd and takes some background knowledge.

If you like bloody series' with great storyline, Berserk is your anime. While i does end on a wierd note, the Manga picks up and continues with an even more phenominal story.

GET NOIR! NOW! It's a really cool spy/Assassin story with lots of intrigue and great, great visuals!!
MADLAX is a lot better. It's made by the same people who mad Noir, Bee Train, and I think that they learned from what they did on Noir and expanded the concept into something a lot better, and something you won't fall asleep two volumes in.

If you like Mecha stories, I'd recommend Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny. Really good stuff going on in there, not only in the action department, but it makes you think about the hidden agendas of the ZAFT and Earth Forces.

Burst Angel is also a good one. Girls with Guns. How can you beat that? ;)

I highly recommend:
Azumanga Daioh (funny as hell)
http://schala.net/azu/

I also recommend as top-notch:
Appleseed the movie (re-release)
The Slayers
.Hack//SIGN
Samurai Champloo
Love Hina
Berzerk
Excel Saga

We order these direct from Hong Kong so entire seasons are in a single pack for around $20. A far better deal than the re-packaged crap they sell at American outlets, 2 or 3 episodes for $40. The hell with that! Order import versions and turn on the English subtitles. (I never listen to the English dubs, hate 'em)

I liked Love Hina
Love Hina is an excellent series, I will grant you that. But on the terms of realism, the characters can be a bit out there sometimes.

You do realize those are bootlegs, don't you? Unless it's coming from Japan, or one of the US companies here, it's 99% likely to be a bootleg. Especially if it's coming from Hong Kong.

No, it's the real deal, not bootlegs. Extremely slick packaging. Usually a single season will be on 3 discs, very slim box with sharp artwork for package and disc. 8 episodes per disc.

This is then repackaged for American stores into a 2-3 episode DVD, and they often stick a stupid stuffed animal in the package and sell it for $40. What a ripoff.

No, the real deal is usually only a couple of episodes per disc. You'll find that many series are released on several discs, and then downsized for US release.

The 12 episode release of Divergence Eve was released on six discs in Japan, and it was released on three here in the US.

Like I said, what you've got are Bootlegs. They're not the real deal.

RommieSG, you amaze me with your psychic ability to determine bootlegs sight unseen. Can we use you to locate buried treasures or douse for water, too?

I guess the only way to shut you up would be to invite you over to my house to physically examine the boxed sets in question. No bootlegger ever put such care into a production, these are originals.

By the way, your Rommie avatar picture is obviously bootlegged, I demand you remove it until you pay royalties to Andromeda's parent company. Until you do, your avatar should read "This space vacant until I pay for bootlegging Lexa". :P
