Police report details Brittney Griner incident at Dallas airport​



A YouTube personality tried to push his way through Phoenix Mercury security personnel to get to Brittney Griner while she and the team were at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Saturday morning, according to a police report obtained by ESPN on Monday. Alex Stein, whom the WNBA described as a "provocateur," approached Griner while team members were walking on a concourse to catch a flight to Indiana for a Sunday tipoff following two games against the Dallas Wings.Officers were dispatched at approximately 9:38 a.m. The security guard told officers that Stein "seemed aggressive and made some inappropriate comments" to Griner, the report stated. While the passenger never got physical with Griner, the Mercury security guard told officers the man was physical with him, but that he did not want to press charges.

Mercury's Brittney Griner to miss 2-game trip, focus on mental health
Griner has appeared in 20 of 23 games for Phoenix in her first season since her high-profile detainment in Russia last year, which lasted nearly 10 months. The 6-foot-9 center has averaged 18.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game, leading Phoenix in each of those categories, and earned her ninth All-Star selection last month.

Griner, who turns 33 in October, is an unrestricted free agent but said she has no thoughts of playing anywhere but Phoenix, where she has spent her 10-season WNBA career. Griner averaged 17.5 points and 6.3 rebounds, playing 31 of 40 games. - Taurasi missed 14 games due to injuries, the most recent due to her toe. Her last game was Aug. 29, when she played just over 13 minutes. But she said she will return for her 20th WNBA season next year, when she turns 42.

The Mercury, who finished last in the league standings at 9-31 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2012, met with the media Monday to wrap up this season and look ahead.

Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi to headline USA Basketball exhibitions​


Brittney Griner and Diana Tauasi headline USA Basketball's roster for its upcoming exhibitions against college teams as well as November training camp, it was announced Thursday. Griner and Taurasi, who turned 41 in June and is a five-time Olympic gold medalist, will join Kahleah Cooper, Allisha Gray, Rhyne Howard, Sabrina Ionescu and Azura Stevens on the roster for both college exhibitions. It will be the first USA Basketball competition for Griner, a two-time Olympian, since her nearly nine-month detainment in Russia last year.

Mercury's Brittney Griner wins WNBA community service award​


Mercury center Brittney Griner received the season-long WNBA Cares Community Assist Award on Friday for her work in trying to get wrongful detainees oversees returned to the United States and for helping marginalized communities in Phoenix. Griner was recognized for her work with Bring Our Families Home, a campaign that helps spread awareness about wrongfully detained Americans around the world in hopes of helping them return, and the BG Heart and Sole Shoe Drive, which Griner began in 2016 and which brought in almost 3,000 pairs of shoes this season. Griner won the monthly WNBA Cares Community Assist Award in June, as well.

Brittney Griner stars for U.S. in exhibition game at Tennessee​


Fans of the Tennessee Lady Vols never forget where someone played in college, especially not a player that beat their beloved team. On Sunday night, they roared when Brittney Griner was introduced as a starter for the U.S. women's national team before an exhibition. The only other player to come close to a similar ovation was five-time Olympic gold medalist Diana Taurasi despite her playing in college at UConn, the biggest rival for the No. 11 Lady Vols. Sunday night marked Griner's first time playing a game with "USA" on the front of her jersey since celebrating winning her second Olympic gold medal in August 2021 at the Tokyo Games.

Griner was arrested in February 2022 at a Moscow airport when customs officials said they found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage. She was convicted and sentenced to nine years in prison in August before being released in December as part of a prisoner exchange. Griner wasn't available to reporters after the U.S. beat Tennessee 95-59. She made clear Friday how happy she is to be representing her country once again. She said she had a bit of a moment Thursday night realizing that she was back with the national team and putting on that "USA" jersey again.
