Brittney Griner's detention in Russia extended through at least July 2.

Adam Silver addresses Brittney Griner's status in Russia amid LeBron James saying WNBA star should question America's support

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver once again addressed the status of Brittney Griner the same day LeBron James clarified on Twitter his comments about the Phoenix Mercury star center. As we have now discussed publicly, it was suggested to us early on that we should not be drawing attention to her because the likely demand would increase in terms of a trade to get her potentially out of the country,” Silver said in a press conference Tuesday in Las Vegas during the NBA Summer League.

LeBron James critical of United States' efforts to bring Brittney Griner home from Russia

As Brittney Griner's detention in Russia has galvanized the sports world in support of the WNBA star's return to the United States, Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James questioned why Griner would want to return to a country that has taken so much time to aid in a resolution for her. "Now, how can she feel like America has her back?" James said in a trailer for the latest episode of his talk show, "The Shop: Uninterrupted," which airs on YouTube. "I would be feeling like, 'Do I even want to go back to America?'" In early June, shortly after the U.S. State Department classified Griner's plight as a wrongful detention, James tweeted in support of the seven-time All-Star. James' Uninterrupted multimedia platform is also selling T-shirts with "We Are BG" printed on the front, with Uninterrupted's online store stating that the proceeds from the merchandise will go to The BG Advocacy Fund, run by Griner's family to cover legal costs associated with her release.

Brittney Griner appears in Russian court after guilty plea

American basketball star Brittney Griner was due back in a Russian court Thursday for trial after she pleaded guilty last week to drug possession charges. In Russia, a guilty plea doesn’t automatically end a trial. Griner’s defense may put forward arguments during the next hearing to mitigate the punishment, or a verdict could be announced. But it wasn’t immediately clear what would happen Thursday. With the U.S. government under pressure at home to do more to secure her freedom, the guilty plea could be an effort to expedite the court proceedings so any negotiations could move forward. A senior Russian diplomat has said no action could be taken by Moscow until the trial was over. In pleading guilty during the previous court hearing on July 7, Griner said she had no intention of committing a crime and had acted unintentionally because she packed for Moscow in a hurry. U.S. President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken have said they were doing all they could to win the release of Griner, as well as other Americans the U.S. considers “wrongly detained” by Russia, including former Marine Paul Whelan.

PART 2

Russian media have speculated that Griner could be swapped for Russian arms trader Viktor Bout, nicknamed “the Merchant of Death,” who is serving a 25-year sentence in the U.S. after being convicted of conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens and providing aid to a terrorist organization. Russia has agitated for Bout’s release for years. But the wide discrepancy in the seriousness of their cases could make such a trade unpalatable to Washington. Others have suggested that Griner could be traded along with Whelan, who is serving 16 years in Russia on an espionage conviction that the U.S. has described as a setup. The State Department’s designation of Griner as wrongfully detained moves her case under the supervision of its special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, effectively the government’s chief hostage negotiator. The classification has irritated Russia.

Hopefully Biden won't try to stop that weird bomber guy from being traded for the lezzie porch monkey.

He likes shit deals though, so that's probably what'll happen.

Brittney Griner had doctor’s note for cannabis, WNBA star’s lawyer says

In court last week, Griner pleaded guilty and acknowledged possessing the canisters but said she had no criminal intent and said they were in her luggage because she packed hastily in her return to Russia to play for the UMMC Ekaterinburg basketball team during the WNBA’s offseason. In Russia’s judicial system, admitting guilt doesn’t automatically end a trial. Since that plea, her court sessions have focused on in-person and written testimony to her good character and athletic prowess.Griner wore a Nirvana T-shirt as she sat inside the defendant’s cage that is customary in Russian courtrooms. At one point, she held up a photo of fellow WNBA players wearing her name and No. 42 on their uniforms in tribute during part of Sunday’s All-Star Game in Chicago.“The attending physician gave Brittney recommendations for the use of medical cannabis,” said her lawyer, Maria Blagovolina. “The permission was issued on behalf of the Arizona Department of Health.” Medical marijuana is not legal in Russia.

I helped capture Russia's 'Merchant of Death.' We must not swap him for Brittney Griner

President Joe Biden and others who seem to believe it's appropriate to consider releasing Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout from prison in exchange for any American citizen wrongfully detained by Russia as a political bargaining chip – whether Brittney Griner, Paul Whelan or someone else – are misguided and naive. We must not negotiate with terrorists. That includes Russian President Vladimir Putin, the greatest terrorist known today. Bout, who is known as the "Merchant of Death," provided the fuel for conflicts across the globe. He was a critical player in the global illicit arms trade not because he could obtain weapons but because he could deliver his destructive cargo anywhere in the world through his control of a private fleet of military aircraft. And he did just that.

I'm a white conservative and yet, I wouldn't go to Russia unless absolutely necessary.

It baffles me that these people wanna go to these places, especially when the clouds of war are gathering.

Joe Biden Widens Path for Brittney Griner's Release Amid Pressure

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden signed an executive order expanding his administration's ability to negotiate the release of Brittney Griner and other Americans that the government has judged to be wrongfully detained abroad. President Joe Biden signed an executive order expanding his administration’s ability to negotiate the return of Brittney Griner and other Americans being held abroad.

Biden's new executive order is meant to make it easier for officials to negotiate the return of American citizens who have been wrongfully detained, the White House said in a statement on Tuesday. It comes as Biden remains under pressure to ensure Griner's release as many, including the president himself, have expressed outrage at her detainment in a Russian prison. The order will allow U.S. government agencies to impose sanctions on those countries that have wrongfully detained Americans, potentially paving the way to escalate sanctions already imposed on Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine. It also directs agencies to share relevant information and intelligence with families of detainees and charges experts to develop strategies to prevent future wrongful detentions, the Biden administration said in a statement.
