CAITLIN CLARK

Clark, Reese, 'looking foward' to WNBA All-Star Game pairing
The two, who played against each other in the 2023 women's NCAA tournament national championship game and 2024 Elite Eight when Clark was at Iowa and Reese was at LSU and three times in the first half of the WNBA season, have momentarily embraced being teammates. They spent time working on a pick-and-roll together during Friday morning's practice.

While Clark and Reese will play in the All-Star Game, both declined invitations to participate in Friday night's skills competition -- Clark in the 3-point contest and Reese in the skills challenge.

Catlin Clark had a career-high 31 points and 12 assists in her final regular-season matchup with fellow rookie sensation Angel Rees, leading the Indiana Fever to a dominating 100-81 win over the reeling Chicago Sky on Friday night.

Clark shot 8-for-14 from the field, including 5-for-9 on 3-pointers, in her 11th double-double - Reese had 10 points and 11 rebounds, breaking a tie with Tina Charles for rookie double-doubles with 23 and passing Sylvia Fowles for the Chicago season record....

Clark, Reese and the 10 best rookie season in WNBA history
We tried to take into account rookies who made an impact in multiple categories during their first season and also whether they performed feats that were historical not just for rookies but players in general. Only two true guards -- Clark and Diana Taurasi -- made this list.

No.3. Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever - 2024
Rookie year stats (through Sept. 10): 19.2 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 8.5 APG, 1.3 SPG

Clark was the top pick in April, following fellow No. 1 selection Aliyah Boston, who was the 2023 Rookie of the Year for the Fever. Those two have made great progress in one season as a top guard-post combo. Clark also has jelled well with starting backcourt mate Kelsey Mitchell; both are averaging just over 19 points per game. A strong case can be made that Clark has had the best offensive season ever for a WNBA rookie.

Caitlin Clark has career-high 35, sets rookie scoring mark in Fever win
Clark now has 761 points in 39 games, so there is the caveat that Augustus -- who will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in October -- set her mark of 744 points in 2006, when the WNBA season was 34 games.

Clark is averaging 19.5 points, a league-high 8.4 assists and 5.7 rebounds.

The record attendance was made possible by the game's being played at Capital One Arena, which is not the Mystics' usual home. Washington plays at Entertainment & Sports Arena, which has a capacity of 4,200.

Indiana (20-20) had already locked up the No. 6 seed and pulled its starters midway through the second half. Clark, the record-setting rookie, had 8 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds in 20 minutes,

Fever ax coach Sides despite Clark stardom, playoff bid

Yet another WNBA team announced a coaching change when the Indiana Fever said Sunday that they had "parted ways" with coach Christie Sides. The Fever, who were led by 2024 No. 1 pick and rookie of the year Catlin Clark, are coming off the franchise's first playoff berth since 2016. Under Sides, who spent two years as head coach, Indiana went 33-47, including a 20-20 record in 2024. The Fever's season ended with a two-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs by the Connecticut Sun. Sides was hired after the 2022 campaign to replace Marianne Stanley and her interim successor, Carlos Knox. Sides had two seasons remaining on a four-year contract. The Fever have not had a head coach stay longer than three seasons since Lin Dunn (2008-14).
