CaptainWacky

It's a good piece. Shame Friday decided to not debate further. A rather dissapointing turn from her.

Great post. A lot of what you said is actually the kind of thing I've been trying to say, but I have a hard time expressing it so clearly. Yes, I've been trying to view death as a release from bondage rather than something to fear, and at times I do feel peaceful. Then my neurons go firing another way and I start to panic and have to spam up the place.

It's nothing that should be approached from any nervous point of view. There are plenty of hormones that dictate when we should be angry and defend what belongs to us in addition to those that say 'WE CANNOT DIE'. Death is a major part of living, something completely avoided nowadays. It should be discussed and dissected in a rational manner.

If I am to disappear forever, so be it.

The 10,000 years before my birth didn't trouble me. Why should the 10,000 years after my death be any more significant?

We're animals. We're bred to live and reproduce, not die peacefully. It's in our genes; it's who we are.

At least that's how I justify avoiding a vasectomy despite already having plenty of kids.

Well let me tell you, CaptainWacky. I love you, my fellow human, and would hug you if you were around me. This gesture in an ever-vanishing universe is all I can give you.

I have accepted the possibility of there existing no God at all, no soul, no heaven or salvation. We will simply cease to be, and sleep forever in the absence of any thought of awareness of darkness

Did the 10,000 years before your birth trouble you?

If anyone has ever suffred from clinical depression they will know all too well the chemical reactions in our brains that protected us before the onset.

Our brains basically drug themselves with seratonin to deal with reality.

Depression and the many offshoots of it are in the basest sense not a chemical problem that is added. It's a chemical solution that is taken away.

We can't handle reality without these protective measures. They distract us from the futility of everything. I can sit here and talk about my own death but I can never really accept it on the most simple level. It's always like I'm talking about it or dealing with it in the third person. I'm not sure anyone can truly accept death.

We are different because of our ability to discern our own purpose. Animals live to feed and to mate. One premise of what I try to convey is that even if humanity cries out for a Divine Logic in the heavens, that it needn't exist simply to satisfy our own need for it, or for it to exist at all.

Quite. But man is arrogant. You will usually find your 'average' Creationist will always revert to the reasoning that he/she is too important to be part of this "system".

The height of hubris.

I'm not going to die 'needlessly,' because I'm too self-aware to accept my own life (The force which gives me self-awareness in the first place) to be so wasteful as it currently might.

I believe that in those of higher intelligence there exists a conscious choice to fulfull your 'purpose' (the advancement of your genes) as opposed to oblivion. We might all be Lego people without purpose but with reason and illogical goals, though we'll still strive on. What I mean to express is that the worst case scenario of our life having no meaning whatsoever (What meaning does an asteroid have when it crashed into a moon?) is not the worst case scenario. It's only the worst case we can imagine, and I don't think it's as terrible as some portray.

PJ and Duncan ranks highly on the list of YouTube vids I've watched, right up there with the many LazyTown vids, that Alizee video you showed me yesterday, AND OF COURSE the Iron fucking Sheik.
