The 2023 Grey Cup will pit Blue Bombers against Alouettes in CFL first​


It will be a Grey Cup first at Tim Hortons Field on Sunday. The Montreal Alouettes and Winnipeg Blue Bombers will square off in the CFL championship game, marking the first time the two franchises have ever met in the Grey Cup. And on Monday, event organizers announced the contest was sold out.

Montreal will make its first appearance in the game since 2010 when it defeated Saskatchewan 21-18 at Commonwealth Stadium. It was the second straight championship win for the Alouettes.

Winnipeg, though, is in the Grey Cup for a fourth straight year and chasing a third win. After downing Hamilton in 2019 and ‘21, the Bombers dropped last year’s game 24-23 to Toronto when Argonauts defensive lineman Robbie Smith blocked Marc Liegghio’s 47-yard field goal try with 54 seconds remaining.

Despite its recent Grey Cup success, Winnipeg is 12-15 overall in the CFL championship game. Montreal has won seven times in 18 appearances.

Winnipeg (14-4) won both regular-season meetings with Montreal (11-7) en route to finishing atop the West Division. The Alouettes were second in the East Division but their 11 wins were the team’s most since 2012. Winnipeg won four-of-six games versus East Division rivals but one of its losses was a 29-23 decision to Hamilton at Tim Hortons Field on Sept. 16. The Bombers were also 6-3 this season away from IG Field. Montreal was 4-4 against West Division squads and 6-3 on the road.

CFL suspends Chad Kelly for violating gender violence policy​


The CFL suspended Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly for at least nine regular-season games Tuesday following its investigation into a lawsuit filed by a former strength and conditioning coach against both the player and club. Kelly is also suspended for Toronto's two preseason games for violating its gender-based violence policy, the league announced. Kelly will be required to undergo confidential assessments by an independent expert and attend mandatory counselling sessions conducted by a gender-based violence expert. Both the counselling sessions and assessments must be satisfactorily completed before the CFL will consider Kelly's reinstatement, the league added in a statement. Otherwise, the league reserves the right to modify his discipline. Kelly, 30, was the CFL's outstanding player last season after leading Toronto to a league-best and franchise-record 16-2 record.

Suspended Argonauts QB Chad Kelly withdraws from camp​


Suspended Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly said he will withdraw from training camp and hopes to "learn, grow and better myself" through counseling after his suspension by the league. Kelly released a statement Thursday through his agent, Chris Lambiris, announcing his decision. The CFL suspended Kelly for at least nine regular-season games on May 7 following its investigation into a lawsuit filed by a former strength and conditioning coach against both the player and club. Kelly is also suspended for Toronto's two preseason games for violating its gender-based violence policy. He will be required to undergo confidential assessments by an independent expert and attend mandatory counselling sessions conducted by a gender-based violence expert.

Kelly, 30, was the CFL's outstanding player last season after leading Toronto to a league-best and franchise-record 16-2 record. The Argos' season ended with a 38-17 home loss to eventual Grey Cup champion Montreal in the East Division final. Kelly played in college at Clemson, East Mississippi Community College and Mississippi. He was the last pick in the 2017 NFL draft, selected by the Denver Broncos. The team released him in 2018 after he was arrested for criminal trespassing.Kelly said he "will take full advantage of this counselling opportunity to learn, grow and better myself." "At the same time, I want to support the Argonauts organization as it prepares for the season and have made the decision to withdraw from training camp to minimize distractions for the team.

CUTDOWN TRACKER: TEAMS MAKE THEIR FINAL ROSTER MOVES​


CFL.ca is tracking every team’s roster moves as clubs are required to make their final cuts as they set their rosters for Week 1 of the 2024 regular season. Teams have until 10 p.m. of their respective local times on Saturday, June 1 to finalize their cuts. The regular season gets underway on Thursday, June 6, when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers host the Montreal Alouettes at Princess Auto Stadium.

CFL fines veteran kickers over chipped football controversy​


Kickers Sergio Castillo, Brett Lauther, Sean Whyte and Lewis Ward were fined by the CFL on Friday after publicly speaking out on the league's use of chipped footballs on field-goal attempts. Castillo took issue with the chipped balls in the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' season-opening 27-12 home loss to the Montreal Alouettes on June 6. Castillo, who made over 90 per cent of his attempts in 2023, missed two of three field goals he tried in the game as well as a convert. Afterwards, Castillo contended the chips — which collect statistical data for the CFL — impacted the ball's trajectory and made it difficult for kickers to do their jobs. Lauther, Whyte and Ward all took to social media to come to Castillo's defence. Shortly afterwards, the CFL said there was no evidence the chips negatively impacted the balls but did amend its rules to allow teams to determine before games whether their punters and kickers would play with chipped footballs or those without chips. The league put microchips into its footballs this season to help generate real-time advanced statistics. It did so in some games last year, but none were used in kicking situations.
