The DS9 version of this would be O'brien beneath a computer console in Ops doing rewiring, at least for the first few seasons.
 
His depression would be brought on by vole bites.
 
Remember when Keiko was cheating on him with dozens of hot Bajoran men so he got Sisko to make a garden for her on the station and she just said "A garden? Unless you've got COCK PLANTS growing in there I'm not interested, loser!"
 
This was, of course, before the wraith inside her departed and jumped into the body of KAI CASSIE.
