Chris Benoit and his whole family are dead

Has Vince ended his fake dead thing for all of this, or are they just pretending nothing happened?

All the fake, Jerry Springer, drama shit is why I don't watch wrestling anymore. MORE WRESTLING LESS BULLSHIT PLEASE.

Millions of people take steroids and don't murder their families though

^Depends what kind and how often.

Well, at least Vince McMahon didn’t try to slap a list of questions out of Meredith Viera’s hands.

That was one of the few positive developments for World Wrestling Entertainment after owner Vince McMahon appeared this morning on the Today show.

Before McMahon appeared, a news piece raising the possibility of a link between steroids and the Benoit murder/suicide as well as the deaths of some other wrestlers. That set the tone for the appearance.

Among the more pertinent exchanges between Viera and an even-keeled McMahon [Note: Viera never said NBC has a business relationship with WWE before conducting the interview]:

X: Viera called WWE on the carpet for issuing a press release Tuesday claiming that steroids couldn’t have been part of the reason for Benoit’s actions when the results of toxicology tests won’t be known for several weeks. McMahon tried to explain the press release was a reaction to “hysteria of the media” trying to link “roid rage” to Benoit’s actions.

“Obviously, this was not an act of rage,” McMahon said. “It was an act of deliberation … There were a number of prescription medications found in the house. Whether they contributed to this, who knows? Whether there was some other aspect for something to do with this behavior, hopefully we’ll find out in some way.

“What we’re about [in WWE] is putting smiles on people’s faces. We’re entertainers. We entertain all over the world. That’s the job description. It’s not something to be tainted and smear with this. It’s no different than a postal worker [shooting] up a post office. There was no indication whatsoever that this person turned into a monster and do what he did. Steroids may or may not have something to do with this. There were other pressures in terms of his son and wife. I don’t know, We may never know. But hopefully, we can put this to bed as best we possibly can and determine what happened once we have the real evidence.”

X: On WWE’s drug-testing policy: “Last February, we instituted a wellness policy to police for steroids or abuse of prescription drugs. We do urine and blood tests to determine as well as test the cardio aspect of things to test for heart disease and heart failure. It’s a comprehensive test. The last test he took of a random nature was in April and it was totally negative. That doesn’t mean he was not taking prescription medication or steroids when this happened. We don’t know.”

X: On 60 wrestlers under the age of 45 dying and what responsibility Vince McMahon feels toward their families: “We’ve had five individuals since we’ve been in business under contract to that died … I can only speak to those five.”

[Note: McMahon’s answer doesn’t take into account the long-term impact that steroid use could have had on performers before WWE instituted its wellness program. But in McMahon’s defense, some of those young deaths also feature performers that never worked for WWE or died of drug-related issues].

X: On what type of impact it would make if steroids were found in Benoit’s system: “I can only speak of our wellness program and how effective that is … All we can do is the best we can with anyone else and establish the wellness program the best we can … This is a horrific tragedy. There is a rush to judgment here as to what caused this. There’s almost a hysteria around us. I don’t know whether it’s justified or not. We won’t know until we get the toxicology reports back. Once we get those back, we’re dealing in real facts. There was no way to tell this man was a monster. He was a mild-mannered individual.

“Everyone in our organization are well-adjusted, family people. They go to work like anybody else except the definition of their job is to put a smile on everybody’s face. It’s important our organization continue to do that for our fans and move on as best as we possibly can not withstanding this devastating situation.”

Final comments: NBC did a better job than Nancy Grace and other CNN/FOX tabloid news shows have done in addressing this topic. But with a lack of knowledge about the wrestling business, Viera didn’t try to push McMahon on some of his answers like whether it was acceptable for wrestlers to take steroids if given a prescription or try to get much insight about what kind of person Benoit was. But I do give McMahon credit for appearing in this kind of forum to address the issue and handling himself professionally.

X: Understandably, wrestling fans are outraged at the ridiculous coverage given the Benoit murder/suicide Wednesday night on CNN’s Nancy Grace Show. I’m actually glad a technological glitch kept me from appearing last night as scheduled. Here is the link: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/295264/wrestling_fans_going_to_war_with_nancy.html

Good old Vince.

Nancy Grace is a scumbag, people should boycott her show!

Vince is right, no one really knows the reason behind all this and the media shouldn't jump to conclusions. He probably did use steroids, but they may not have had anything to do with it.

I have a question: If all wrestlers stopped taking steroids, and they all went to a more normal size, would it hurt wrestling? Would people still want to watch?

Personally I wouldn't care. There is a belief though (mainly from Vince, as it happens) that wrestlers should be "big".

You know, it's hard to form an opinion on this whole situation when we are looking in as observers with limited information. We can only really make a judgment --if we choose to make a judgment-- on the end result. The end result being that he killed his family and himself.

I am not surprised to see the "roid rage" subject being brought up as a possible means to this end result. Although I think people are categorizing it incorrectly. This was not a case of rage. That I am certain of. This was a case of deep depression and hopelessness. Such states are incredibly powerful and can make the sufferer extremely delusional. I have no doubt that Benoit was a good guy for all intensive purposes.

Now, that said, there is still no excuse for what he did. There are reasons for what he did that are very important to take into account but none of them can ever be used as an excuse.

Benoit provided me personally with a lot of entertainment in his professional work as a Wrestler. He was one of the best and I was always jolted from my usual half-comatose state when watching WWE these days when I heard his entrance music since I knew a Benoit match was not to be missed.

Has that changed now? - I think it has, yeah. I was talking to Wacky about this the other day. How can I watch a Benoit match again and just enjoy it as a great wrestling match?

When I see Benoit and Eddie wrestle now all I see is a dead guy and a murderer. It's too much baggage to take into an entertainment format. And in a way it, along with a number of other tragic events in wrestling, has ruined the whole concept of this over-the-top loud and brash entertainment performance art.

I feel bad for the whole Benoit family. Including Benoit.

I understand if people want to get self-righteous and judge the man on his final moments and I think that I have done that to an extent as well. Though I don't think that feeling disgust and disbelief at his final moments and what he did necessarily stops one feeling sorry for the whole lot of them and that the situation got to that point.

I do agree with the WWE taking him off the website and distancing themselves from Benoit. As I said earlier, they're in business as an entertainment brand. They can't afford to, nor should they be expected to make amends and deal with this tragedy as far as the business goes.

This whole thing is just fucked up. Benoit being the most fucked up of all.

This has marred wrestling for me and much more importantly three people have died in rather fucked up circumstances. But that's that.

Time to move on.

WWE have publicly handled this case very, very well, it must be said.

Nice to see LG spite-repping a genuine post up there, isn't it?

It sounds like Benoit was stuffed up with steroids (but not necessarily when he killed his family) following the findings of raiding his doctors offices as announced yesterday. Regular '10 months supplies' every 2 months over May '06 - May '07.

Of course, this covers Benoit's 4 month leave period, where most of the problems he evidently had in his relationships must have come to a head, so he was probably just sitting about injecting himself full of steroids.

If this is the case, it discredits him even more for not learning from Guerrero's fate.

yep.

Do you look badly on Crash Holly for him committing suicide? does that mean we don't mention him even though he was entertaining?
There's a huge step in someone killing themselves and them being a coward and taking out innocent people. One of my favorite daytime actors committed suicide around this time last summer ( a year yesterday, come to think of it). I don't enjoy his performances any less, but I do feel sorry that he felt so miserable.

But at least he only took out himself.

As others have said, Benoit is a coward, and there's no excuse for killing your own child and wife. His personal demise will not change the amount of awards he won or his talent in the ring, but he certainly would not be an idol or hero of mine, if I were into wrestling.

I'm clinging to the wiki update 14 hours before the bodies were discovered.

Stamford Conn IP.

Benoit was murdered in my book.

I'm also done with WWE.

You don't really believe that.

dear god

You can always count on Warrior to make the wrestling business appear even more demented than it actually already is.
