.45 is fine for outdoors -- inside, though, you don't want to overpenetrate the target and ruin your own valuables. 10mm JHP is better indoors, especially with a nice center-of-mass double-tap. Even if they're wearing IIIA body armor complete with trauma plate (and what kind of petty burglar would have that kind of resource base?) it's gonna knock two things: Their ass to the floor and the wind out of the fucker. At that point, evasives and counterfire will be the last thing on the fucker's mind.
